HONOLULU — Junior Jalen Phillips put down a team-high 15 kills, but 18th-ranked CSUN dropped its regular-season finale in four sets at No. 2 Hawaii on Saturday night, 25-15, 21-25, 25-14, 25-16, at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
Phillips hit .175 on 40 swings to go with a pair of digs. Setter Owen Douphner was CSUN's second-leading hitter in the match with four kills on a team-high .333 hitting. Douphner also added 24 assists, six digs, and one ace. Shane Nhem contributed three kills on .250 hitting, and Jordan Lucas also had three kills, six digs, and three blocks.
CSUN (12-14, 0-10) hit just .073 as a team, compared to Hawaii's .363, and was out-blocked 14.5 to 4.0.
After hitting -.143 in dropping the opening set in the opening set, the Matadors responded with their strongest stretch of the night in set two. Behind 10 kills from Phillips and a .303 team hitting percentage, CSUN claimed the second set (25-21), siding out at an 80% clip to even the match.
However, the hosts bounced back to hit a match-high .545 in the third set, while limiting CSUN to an .043 clip. After hitting .545 in the third, the Rainbow Warriors hit .316 in the fourth, capitalizing on transition opportunities and sustained serving pressure. CSUN, meanwhile, combined for just 12 kills across the final two frames and hit below .050 in each.
Defensively, CSUN managed 23 digs, six each from Douphner and Lucas, and four team blocks, but could not slow Hawaii's pin hitters, who combined for 30 kills on efficient swings.
UP NEXT
CSUN will be the No. 6 seed in next week's OUTRIGGER Big West Men's Volleyball Championship and will take on No. 3-seed UC Irvine in the first round on Thursday at the Bren Events Center in Irvine.
