RIVERSIDE, Calif.—UC Riverside's Antonio Lokossou scored with 5:06 remaining in the second half to give the Highlanders a 2-1 victory over CSUN in the Big West Conference men's soccer regular season finale for both clubs in Riverside Saturday night.
Â
UC Riverside (13 points, 4-5-1 Big West, 4-12-1 overall) earned the No. 3 seed in the South Division as Cal State Fullerton (14 points, 4-4-2 Big West, 9-7-3 overall) and CSUN (14 points, 4-4-2 Big West, 9-8-2 overall) finished in a first-place tie for the South Division title. As a result of the Titans' victory over the Matadors earlier this week, Cal State Fullerton will be the No. 1 seed coming out of the South with CSUN being the No. 2.
Â
The final Big West match of the regular season will be on Sunday night when Sacramento State travels to UC Davis. If Sacramento State wins, the Matadors will face UC Santa Barbara Wednesday night in the Big West quarterfinals. If UC Davis (which has clinched home field advantage throughout the Big West Tournament) wins, then CSUN will face Sacramento State Wednesday night. Wednesday's game time is tentatively set for 7 p.m. in Northridge.
Â
After a scoreless first half, Julio Rubio broke the seal for the Matadors in the 55th minute. Emmanuel Usen Jr. found Rubio down the left side where Rubio made it past the defense and scored from in-between Vincent Morales, the UCR goalie and the post.
Â
The Highlanders tied the match at the 65:51 mark. Daniel Aguirre took a free kick from the left side and found James Alewine III on the right side where Alewine III headed in his second goal of the season from four yards out. Â
Â
A three-shot UC Riverside flurry in the 71st and 72nd minutes resulted in two saves for CSUN goalie Henrik Regitnig. CSUN took two shots on goal over the next 10 minutes on which Morales charted a pair of saves to keep the score tied at one.
Â
The game winning goal came off a corner kick. Ricardo Ruiz took the corner sending the ball in. Robert Garcia-Vargas passed the ball from the left to the right for Lokossou who scored his fifth goal of the year to clinch a Big West Tournament spot for the Highlanders. The Matadors' best chance to tie the match late came with 1:07 to go. Jeremy Degraffenreidt's attempt was saved by Morales. Â
Â
"We let the number one seed slip away," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "We have to put it behind us and get ready for the Big West playoffs."
