NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Aeryn Owens, Rachel Diaz and Morgan Salone combined for 35 of CSUN's 51 kills Friday as the Matadors swept visiting Cal State Fullerton, 25-22, 25-14, 25-19 in a Big West Conference match at The Matadome.
Owens connected for a match-high 15 kills on 38 swings to hit .237 while also digging seven balls. Diaz added 10 kills with a single hitting error on 16 swings to hit a team-high .562 and Salone also posted 10 kills on .296 hitting.
In her penultimate home match, senior setter Lauren Conati had a spectacular all-around match with 32 assists, 12 digs, six kills and a career-high five aces. The double-double was her fourth of the season and 10th of her CSUN career. Senior libero Katie Sato matched Conati with 12 digs to pace the Matadors.
As a team, the Matadors hit .295 as they posted their first win since defeating UC Davis on the road Oct. 5.
"Playing at home is always a good thing and I thought the team was ready for it tonight," said CSUNÂ head coach Jeff Stork. "We played the upper half of the Big West over the last few weeks but we were confident heading into tonight's match. Fullerton is a scrappy team but they had some trouble generating points and we were able to shift gears a little bit and we did a good job of point scoring."
Leading 13-12 in the opening set, CSUN outscored the Titans 5-1 over the next six points to build a 18-13 lead. A late 5-0 run by the visitors trimmed a 23-17 Matador lead down to one but a Conati kill followed by a Sato ace sealed the 25-22 CSUN win.
The Titans led 9-7 in the second frame before the Matadors rolled off seven straight points with Erin Indermill at the service line. After seeing its lead trimmed to 15-12, CSUNÂ put the set away with a 9-1 run.
The Matadors then jumped out to a 15-8 lead in the final set and were never threatened from that point on in taking the straight set win.
Madeline Schneider led the Titans (5-21, 1-12 Big West) with 12 kills.
CSUNÂ caps the 2017 home season Saturday hosting UC Riverside at 7 p.m. The Matadors will honor their senior class of Lauren Conati, Rachel Diaz, Katie Sato and Nickeisha Williams in a postgame ceremony.
