RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The CSUNÂ women's volleyball team capped the season in spectacular fashion, coming back from two sets down to defeat the UC Riverside Highlanders in five sets Tuesday night at the SRC Arena.
Junior Aeryn Owens had a match-high 20 kills (.300) to pace CSUNÂ which put four hitters in double figures in kills. Owens capped an impressive junior season by adding 16 digs for her 11th double of the season.
Sophomore Cassidy Rosso put together her best performance of the season, coming off the bench to put down a season-high 14 kills on 35 swings to hit .257. Nickeisha Williams capped her senior season with 13 kills on .423 hitting while Rachel Diaz added 11 kills on .474 attacking in her final collegiate match.Â
"The seniors were awesome tonight, it was just a great team win," said CSUN head coach Jeff Stork. "We made a couple adjustments and we were able to maintain it over the last three sets. Aeryn and Rachel did their usual thing but it was great to see Nicki and Cassidy put up the numbers they did tonight."
Lauren Conati and Katie Sato also played their final match for the Matadors with Conati also posting a double-double with 54 assists and 11 digs while Sato had 22 digs giving her 1,318 career digs which is second all-time in CSUN history. Conati closes her Matador career with 2,640 career assists.
The host Highlanders took advantage of several CSUNÂ miscues in the winning the first two sets. The Matadors committed 15 hitting errors over the first two sets, including 10 in set one. But CSUNÂ was able to turn its offense around over the final three sets, hitting a combined .319 in claiming the five-set win.
The Matadors finish the season with an overall record of 13-15 and CSUNÂ finished in a fifth place tie in the Big West at 7-9.
UC Riverside (10-18, 2-14) was led by Fabiana Rosas and Mickayla Shrerman who each had 14 kills.
