NORTHRIDGE, CA---
Earning a series victory yesterday afternoon, CSUN Baseball (6-5) dropped the finale of a three-game set to No. 14 Vanderbilt, 11-3, on Sunday afternoon at Hawkins Field. Three Matadors finished with two hits including Riley Conlan who drove in all three runs and hit a solo home run. Outhitting the Commodores on the day, 11-9, CSUN was unable to overcome a Vanderbilt seven-run fifth inning in its loss on Sunday.Â
Blanked in the first inning, Vanderbilt took a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo home run from Ethan Paul. The Commodores looked for more in the third after loading the bases with two outs, but CSUN starter Samuel Myers (1-1) escaped further trouble by retiring Julian Infante on a ground out.Â
The Matadors threatened in the top of the fourth inning, loading the bases as well with two outs. Giving up singles to Fred Smith and Kevin Riley, Drake Fellows walked Nick Sablock to load the bases to bring up Nolan Bumstead. Fellows recovered nicely by forcing Bumstead to hit into a groundout at second base.Â
Myers struck out JJ Bleday to begin the fourth but Paul struck again with another solo blast to put Vanderbilt ahead by two. The Commodores would be far from done as a huge fifth inning broke the game wide open.Â
Walking two of the first three batters in the bottom of the fifth, Myers exited the ballgame, giving way for Drake Atlee. The Vanderbilt greeted Atlee unkindly with five hits. Bleday, Paul, Jason Delay and Stephen Scott all picked up an RBI in the frame and Jaren Kendall dealt the big blow with a three-run double with two outs to put the Commodores ahead 9-0.Â
Vanderbilt would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on a bases loaded walk drawn from Scott and an infield single from Walker Grisanti. Â
Conlan broke up Fellows' shutout bid in the sixth inning on a leadoff home run to deep right field. An inning later, Conlan doubled in two more runs with a shot to right field, plating Smith and Alvaro Rubalcaba.Â
Eight of the nine Matadors in the starting lineup registered hits on the day led by Conlan, Smith and Albee Weiss who all recorded two hits. In the series, Conland finished 5-of-11 with five RBI and three runs scored while Weiss collected four hits, two RBI and a home run.Â
Although the Matadors were unable to complete the series sweep, the Matadors earned their first series victory over an SEC team in program history this weekend along with their first series win over a Top 25 ranked team in eight seasons.Â
The Matadors conclude their road trip on Tuesday evening at UCLA. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.Â
