The Matadors improve to 5-9 on the season heading into their final two home duals Friday against Concordia-Irvine and Arizona State.
"I'm really happy with how the girls played and represented themselves today as we opened a four-match week," said CSUN head coach Jeff Stork. "I thought there was a difference between the two teams we played today. Cal State LA is a new program with players who haven't played a lot of beach which enabled us to work on some things to make our pairs better. All of our pairs are getting better as we look forward to a tough challenge tomorrow."
CSUN opened the day with a 3-2 win over the Roadrunners as the Matadors got out to quick start winning the first three matches. Kristey Markle and Autumn Russell picked up CSUN's first win in the No. 4 match defeating Emily Lopes and Kayla Tinker 21-16, 21-16.
The Matadors capped the first flight of matches with a win at No. 2 as Maddie Leiphardt and Nickeisha Williams swept Jocelyn Rodriguez and Madi Busler 21-19, 21-15. The second flight got underway with the final three matches and CSUN clinched its second win over CSUB this season when Aeryn Owens and Erin Indermill claimed a 21-18, 22-20 win in the No. 3 match.
The duo of Carol Grasso and Sara Little got the Roadrunners on the board at No. 1 as the CSUB duo swept CSUN's Julie Haake and Katie Sato 21-19, 21-16. Bakersfield then made the final score 3-2 when the No. 5 pair of Hannah Manzanares and Fabiana Andrade pulled out a three-set win over Nico Stork and Nicolette Pinkney 23-25, 21-18, 15-9.
The Roadrunners then took on Cal State LA in the middle dual with CSU Bakersfield sweeping all five matches.
CSUN then picked up its fifth win of the season as the Matadors blanked the Golden Eagles in all five matches.
Owens and Indermill put CSUN up 1-0 as the duo won the No. 4 match over Cynthia Giron and Daisia LaBrie 21-18, 21-12. The win improved the CSUN pair to 7-4 on the season. Leiphardt and Williams next picked up their team-leading eighth win of the season with a 21-13, 21-19 win at No. 2.
Markle and Russell made quick work of the Golden Eagles in the No. 3 match, winning 21-4, 21-5 while Stork and Pinkney won 21-11, 21-4 in the No. 5 match over Yasmani Wallace and Sifa Faaiu. The Matadors capped the sweep as Haake and Sato earned their third win of the season 21-12, 21-10 over Iona Lofrano and Lauren Gomez.
CSUN completes the 2017 home season Friday, hosting Concordia at 11 a.m. and Arizona State at 3 p.m.
