Savannah Horvath Smacks Home Runs in Each Victory
DAVIS, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (31-22, 11-10 Big West) defeated UC Davis 4-2 and 8-3 Saturday afternoon in a Big West Conference doubleheader at LaRue Field. In game one, Savannah Horvath smashed a grand slam and Cheyenne Noli tossed a complete game to post her first career victory. Â In game two, Horvath added a solo home run and Jessica Rothanzl finished 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and four RBIs to conclude her Matador career.Â
In game one, CSUN scored four runs in the top of the third to back up a solid performance from Noli. Tara Kliebenstein started the frame with a double, Mackenzie Babbitt reached on an error and Taylor Glover singled to load the bases. That brought Horvath to the dish and she roped her 12th home run of the season to give CSUN a 4-0 advantage.Â
Noli (1-2) went all seven innings, working around eight hits and a walk. UC Davis struck for two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but she got out of the jam to keep the Matadors ahead on the scoreboard. In the seventh, the Aggies tried to rally, but Noli and the CSUN defense recorded a pair of ground outs to end the game.Â
In game two, the Matador offense exploded for six extra-base hits. Rothanzl had a career-high four RBIs to go with her first career triple. Glover, Jessica Alexander, Rothanzl and Karlie Habitz all added doubles in the win. Alexander finished 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.Â
After the Aggies pushed a run across in the first inning, the Matadors struck for three runs in the second. Rothanzl blasted a triple off the wall in left to score Katie Hooper and Alexander. She then came home on a wild pitch to give CSUN a 3-1 advantage.Â
In the third, Alexander roped a double to score Horvath and in the fifth Horvath launched her 13th home run of the season. She finished the year with 35 home runs for her career, moving into eighth outright in Big West Conference history.
The sixth saw Rothanzl lace a two-run double to score Alexander and Fleming and then Habitz delivered a pinch-hit RBI double to plate Rothanzl.Â
Daphne Pofek (16-8) earned the win with 5.2 innings of relief work. She scattered five hits and two earned runs in her final appearance as a Matador. She finished with a 2.35 ERA, 79 strikeouts and a .214 opponent batting average in a team-high 152 innings of work in 2017.Â
CSUN posted its fourth-straight 30-win season, a feat not accomplished by the Matadors since 1996-99 seasons. The 2017 senior class posted a 137-87 (.612) record over their four seasons.Â
