Northridge, CA – This week, CSUN Men's Basketball Head Coach Reggie Theus is visiting the Philippines on behalf of the NBA. Theus, alongside Steven Adams of the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Laker Girls, is representing CSUN at NBA 3X Philippines 2017, an elite 3-on-3 basketball competition that is in its seventh year in the Philippines.
Â
As part of his time in Manila, Theus will participate in an NBA Cares Court Donation Turnover, conduct clinics and appear at the NBA 3x Philippines Playoffs and Finals.
Â
"I'm super excited," said Theus of the trip. "The Philippines is the second-largest market in the world for basketball and it's an honor to be chosen to go there on behalf of the NBA."
Â
"This will be my first trip to the Philippines," Theus told NBA.com. "I can't wait to see the passion Filipinos have for the game of basketball. With the inclusion of 3-on-3 basketball in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, NBA 3X is a testament to the growth and popularity of the game internationally."
Â
The Philippines are the home of new Matador Kobe Paras, who has plenty of experience playing 3x3 basketball. Paras recently represented his country at the FIBA 3x3 World Cup, where his team finished 11th, and he was the event's back-to-back champion in the Slam Dunk competition playing for the Philippine's U-18 team.
Â
"When you watch it and know what it's all about, you really appreciate it," said Theus of the 3x3 style of play. "I think they're playing hard; the skill level is very high. It's an exciting brand of basketball."
Â
Theus enters his fifth season as the head coach of the Matadors this winter and last season, he coached CSUN to the Big West Conference Tournament and to its most road conference wins in six seasons.Â
Theus has more than 13 years of collegiate and professional coaching experience. Before coming to CSUN, he spent a season as the Head Coach of the Los Angeles Lakers' D-League affiliate and before that he was an assistant coach with the Minnesota Timberwolves (2009-11), the head coach of the Sacramento Kings (2007-9), the head coach at New Mexico State (2006-7) and an assistant coach at the University of Louisville (2003-5).
As a player, Theus was an All-American at UNLV, spent 13 seasons in the NBA and was a two-time All Star. He was the ninth overall pick of the Chicago Bulls and in his first year, he was named to the NBA's All-Rookie Team and was runner up for Rookie of the Year. Theus spent five and a half seasons with the Bulls and still ranks on many of the Bulls' all-time top 10 lists. He went on to play for the Kings, Hawks, Magic and Nets and ranks on several Sacramento Kings top 10 lists.
Â
NBA 3X Philippines 2017 will feature a 3-on-3 tournament with men's and women's teams of all skill levels as well as NBA entertainment throughout the weekend. The competitive 3-on-3 tournament includes divisions for boys (under-13, under-16, under-18, and open category), girls (under-16 and open category), an invitation only Celebrity Division featuring local personalities, as well as a new division exclusive to AXA employees and distributors.
