NORTHRIDGE, CA---
CSUN Women's Soccer (0-0-2) led for nearly the entire afternoon but settled for a 1-1 draw with Pacific on Sunday afternoon at Matador Soccer Field. Junior Marissa Favela scored her first career goal in the opening moments of the contest while Cynthia Sanchez collected five shots with three on goal as well as a late shot that rang off the crossbar. Holding a 1-0 advantage until the 85th minute, CSUN surrendered a goal late in regulation and earned a draw after two scoreless overtime periods.Â
The Matadors posted 19 shots in the match with six on goal compared to the Tigers who collected 16 shots with three on goal. CSUN also registered a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.Â
At the outset of the match, the Matadors came out quickly and immediately pressed the Tiger defense. Sanchez recorded the Matadors' first shot on goal of the day after receiving a pass from Sydney Gilbert from the left wing. A minute later, the Matadors took the lead off a well executed set piece. Taking a corner kick, Sylvia Trinh delivered a perfect pass to the far post, finding Favela who headed in her first collegiate strike.Â
The Tigers looked for the equalizer throughout the first half, earning nine shots in the 45-minute session. McCaskill did her best to keep the game scoreless, picking up a save in the 36th minute off a shot from Bryndis Run Thorolfsdottir. On the play, McCaskill punched the shot attempt up and over the goal.Â
Still ahead 1-0 after halftime, the Matadors recieved an opportunity to stretch their lead in the 59th minute. After a Pacific foul was commited inside its own box, Sanchez took the penalty kick but was unable to find the net as goalkeeper Regan Heslop made a diving save to her left.Â
Earning seven shots in the second period, CSUN continued to apply the pressure on the offensive end. In the 71st minute, Favela came within inches of another goal but her shot from the right wing went high. Sanchez also forced Heslop to make a save and Lindsay Kutscher headed a shot just wide of the netting in the 83rd minute.Â
With time running out in regulation, Pacific drew even on a shot that came from near midfield. After both sides exchanged possessions at the middle of the field, Hannah Terry took control of the ball and fired a shot from about 40 yards out. Despite a leap from McCaskill, the long ball sailed over the Matador 'keeper's outstretched hands and into the goal.Â
After neither side could break through in the final minutes of the second half, the game entered overtime. The Matadors earned several close looks at the net including a shot from Sydney Gilbert and another header from Kutscher that went wide. In another close call, Sanchez hit the cross bar off a run with seconds remaining in the first overtime.Â
CSUN picked up three more shots in the second overtime but neither shot found the netting. The Matadors' final shot came in the 103rd minute as Kutscher headed a shot that was stopped by Heslop.Â
For Favela, her first goal came in her 30th career match with the Matadors. Thus far on the season, Favela has put six of her 10 shots on goal. Trinh's helper in the contest was her eighth of her Matador career.Â
The Matadors continue a four-game homestand next Thursday against Houston. Kick off is slated for 7 p.m.Â
