SACRAMENTO, Calif.--A Sacramento State goal in the 52nd minute was enough for the Hornets to defeat CSUN 1-0 in the Big West Conference men's soccer opener for both clubs Thursday afternoon.
The Matadors attacked early, resulting in the first shot of the match in the fifth minute when Emmanuel Usen Jr.'s try was saved by James Del Curto out-of-bounds. CSUN was awarded a corner, but Sacramento State was able to sweep the ball out. The Matadors would earn two more corners over the next 20+ minutes. Each time, the Hornets turned away CSUN.
Sacramento State (5-4) did not take a shot until the 21:58 mark when Christian Webb's attempt was blocked. The Matadors successfully swept away the Hornets's first corner attempt in the 25th minute. The Matadors and the Hornets each had a corner in the final 15 minutes. Both times the ball was cleared out. Sacramento State tallied the final shot of the opening frame. Coming off a CSUN foul, the Hornets worked the ball down the field before Paul Geyer's attempt from 30 yards out hit the left post at the buzzer.
The Hornets took the lead in the 52nd minute. The Matadors were whistled for a foul, setting up a free kick. Justin Bedig sent the ball in towards Matt Carnefix who used a volley off his right leg that went past the CSUN defense through the right side and into the back of the net.
The Matadors threatened in the 62nd minute when CSUN was able to create a chance for Samuel Dadzie. Dadzie's long blast was saved by Del Curto. Del Curto's long kick after the save allowed the Hornets to create a quick chance that saw Bedig take a shot that was blocked by the CSUN defense. Julio Rubio was stymied by Del Curto in the 73rd minute when he took a pair of shots that were saved by the Sacramento State net minder. Rubio's third shot of the match was blocked the Hornet defense in the 79th minute.
Sac State attacked on its ensuing possession. The rush resulted in a Brad Bumgarner attempt that was saved by Henrik Regitnik. The Hornets kept the ball in the CSUN zone, resulting in a Tyler Moss shot that went wide. The final Matadors' shot on goal of the match was a Dean Wright header that Del Curto saved in the 88th minute.
"Our conference is great! "We need to play better and we will," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila.
