CSUN’s Nicholas Grinde scored with 15 seconds remaining in regulation as the Matadors battled to a 1-1 tie with UC Davis Saturday afternoon.
DAVIS, Calif.—CSUN's Nicholas Grinde scored with 15 seconds remaining in regulation as the Matadors battled to a 1-1 tie with UC Davis on the Aggie Soccer Field pitch Saturday afternoon.
CSUN pushed away a UC Davis corner kick attempt in the fourth minute. The Matadors attempted the first shot of the match in the 13th minute when Andrew Rizeq's attempt was blocked. The Aggies' posted their first shot in the 17th minute, a Chase Rhode header that resulted in a UC Davis corner.
CSUN turned away the set piece. The Matadors recorded the next offensive chance when Darion Mealing's shot was blocked in the 18th minute. The Aggies would earn their third corner in the first 20 minutes the next time down. CSUN was again successful in defending the offensive opportunity. Henrik Regitnig, the Matadors' goalie, tallied his first save in the 25th minute when he turned away Adam Mickelson's attempt.
UC Davis used a long pass to get behind the CSUN defense in the 34th. The Aggies worked the ball to Justin Wright. Wright's blast was online, but was blocked by Samuel Dadzie. The rebound came out to Brian Quintero who saw his shot go wide. Nabi Kibunguchy posted a shot that went high at the 40:03 mark. 1:11 later, Matt Baringer had his shot saved by Regitnig.
The Aggies, who opened the second half on offense, saw Kibunguchy take a shot 23 seconds into the closing frame. UCD (4-5-2, 1-0-1 Big West) was awarded a corner kick that resulted in a Kibunguchy header that was wide. The Matadors pressed, resulting in a 53rd minute corner kick. Michael Flores sent the ball towards the box where Papi Diouf's shot was saved by Wallis Lapsley. Regitnig saved a second shot attempt from Quintero on the ensuing UC Davis possession.
The action remained at high pace as CSUN earned three corner kicks. On each set opportunity, the Aggies were able to fend off the Matadors. Roy Bateng took the first UCD shot in over 10 minutes at 67:08, a ball that went high. Kyle Higgins went wide with a shot for UC Davis in the 72nd. Miguel Acevedo was high with an attempt a minute later for the Aggies. Another minute went by before Regitnig saved a Boateng shot from close range.
Higgins put an attempt on goal that was saved by Regitnig in the 82nd minute. Mickelson nearly put the Aggies ahead in the 85th minute. He took an Evan Barrett pass and sent the ball towards the CSUN net. The shot went off the crossbar. The Aggies broke the seal with 2:04 remaining. CSUN was called for a hand ball in the box. UCD was awarded the penalty kick which Acevedo converted. The Matadors attacked, winning possession with less than a minute to play in regulation. The push worked CSUN sent the ball towards the Davis goal. The ball was sent around, ending up on Grinde's foot and he tied it with just 15 seconds remaining in the second half.
The Matadors defended a UC Davis corner 1:35 into the first overtime. CSUN advanced down the field, resulting in a Flores's shot that was blocked. The Matadors went down a man with 28 seconds to go in the first overtime when Mealing was issued his second yellow card of the match, resulting in an ejection.
The Aggies earned an early corner to begin the second OT. CSUN fended off the set piece 65 seconds in. UC Davis registered the first shot of the second overtime when Greg Salazar was wide in the 104th minute. The Aggies used a corner to create a chance for Boateng who sent a header towards Regitnig. Regitnig made the save. The rebound came out in front where Baringer had a shot blocked. The ball went over the CSUN end line, giving UCD their 10th corner of the match. The Matadors sent the ball away. That would be the final offensive charge for either team, resulting in the tie.
UC Davis outshot CSUN 21-5, 8-2 on goal. Regitnig made a season high seven saves, compared to one for Lapsley. The Aggies held a 10-4 corner kick advantage.
"That was the hardest point we ever have earned in the Big West," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "Today's result was a great team point."
CSUN (5-5-1, 0-1-1 Big West) returns home for the first time since Sept. 14 on Thursday when the Matadors host UC Santa Barbara (3-4-2, 1-0 Big West).
