NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (6-5-1, 2-2-0 BWC) earned its second-straight conference win by defeating UC Riverside (10-2-3, 1-2-2 BWC) 1-0 on Sunday evening at Matador Soccer Field. Marissa Favela broke a scoreless tie in the second half with her fifth goal of the season. In net, Amanda Delgado notched her third clean sheet as she racked up three saves. CSUN finished with an 18-13 shot advantage while the teams registered seven corner kicks apiece on the night.
"I thought the first half was one of the best halves we've had all year as far as our energy went and some of our quality," said head coach Keith West. "I'm a firm believer when the team is bringing energy together [good things happen]. One pencil is strong but when you put 40 pencils together you can't break it. I think the team is playing that way right now, and we're playing with a lot of belief. I said all year I love this group. They're starting to believe they can do it and they're starting to do it."
Playing against a UC Riverside team that had allowed four goals all season, the Matadors came out as the aggressors, earning five of the game's first six shots. UC Riverside though nearly took the lead in the fourth minute off a shot from Kyra Taylor that hit the crossbar. In the first half, CSUN out-shot the Highlanders, 13-4, including 4-0 in shots on goal. Shortly after Destinney Duron nearly hit the net from the right wing, Favela would have her shot blocked from center box. Bethany Fitzsimmons took the Matadors' final shot in the 35th minute but Annie Bailey would make a save.
After intermission, the Highlanders went on the attack and nearly came away with the first goal. Delgado made her first save in acrobatic fashion as she dove her to right and knocked away a shot from Amanda Roy in the 51st minute. UCR quickly regained possession but the Matador defense held firm as they withstood a pair of shots from Kyra Taylor. Moments later, the Matadors turned the tables leading to a corner kick attempt in the 56th minute. Favela took the corner kick from the right and was able to hit the side netting at the back post to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead.
Seeking the equalizer, the Highlanders pressed the Matador defense down the stretch of the match. After a CSUN foul, Briana Saldana found room on the left wing and looked for the far right post, however Delgado had other ideas. Delgado timed her jump nicely and punched the ball out of bounds near the right corner of the netting. The freshman saved another shot from Roy in the 88th minute to preserve the shutout.
Favela moved into a three-way tie for eighth place on the Matadors' all-time career scoring list with her goal on Sunday. Now with 12 career goals, Favela is tied with Susie Mischenko (2004-07) and Heidi Farran (2007-11) in the CSUN record books. Favela's next goal would move her into a seventh-place tie with Melissa Fernandez (2009-12).
The Matadors return to the road on Thursday, Oct. 18 to face UC Irvine with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. CSUN hosts its final home match of the regular season against UC Davis. on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m.
