10/18/2018 9:17:00 PM | Women's Soccer
IRVINE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (6-6-1, 2-3-0 BWC) dropped a 3-0 decision to UC Irvine at Anteater Stadium on Thursday evening. The Anteaters scored all three of their goals in the first half and kept the Matadors at bay throughout the second period to post the shutout victory.
UCI out-shot CSUN 10-7 in the match including 5-3 in shots on goal. The Anteaters also held a 7-1 corner kick advantage. A total of 31 fouls were committed with UCI whistled for 20 of them. Marissa Favela, Amanda Martin and Madison MacKenzie all saw yellow cards while Claire Grouwinkel received a caution for the Anteaters.Â
The first half would belong to the Anteaters who quickly grabbed the lead in the opening minutes. After earning a set piece in the 13th minute, Reema Bzeih would hit the netting from the corner to put UC Irvine on top. CSUN looked to even the match minutes later on a shot from Bret Guarino but her shot bounced wide of the net.
Goalkeeper Amanda Delgado kept the Anteaters off the scoreboard for the moment with a save in the 19th minute but the Anteaters would strike again less than two minutes later. Following another corner kick, the Anteaters fed the ball into the box where a CSUN defender deflected the ball. Shelby Lee though finished the play with a low shot that tucked inside the far post. The Anteaters later capitalized again off a corner kick chance as Alex Karlowtisch hit the net in the 40th minute.
The Matadors' best scoring chance of the first half came in the 43rd minute. Off a turnover, Bethany Fitzsimmons found room in the box but struck the crossbar. Before the Matadors could recover the ball, the UCI defense cleaned up the play. The Anteaters also came up unlucky in the final seconds of the half on a shot from Scarlett Camberous that hit the post.
Looking up at a 3-0 deficit, CSUN continued to fight in the second half. The Matadors out-shot the Anteaters 4-3 in the period with two of their shots on goal. Goalkeeper Maddie Newsom saved both of Alexis White's shots in the second half including a close call in the 59th minute. On the play, Newsome traveled toward the corner of the goal before punching the ball out of frame. Lindsay Kutscher would take the Matadors' final shot in the 62nd minute but her shot went high.
The Matadors return home Sunday afternoon to face UC Davis in their final regular season match. The team will celebrate Senior Day as the Matadors' eight-member senior class will be honored prior to the start of the match. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.Â
