CSUN Visits UCSB, Long Beach State to Wrap Up Regular Season

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---With Big West Tournament spots still up for grabs, CSUN Women's Soccer (6-7-1, 2-4-0 BWC) hits the road for its final two matches of the regular season. The Matadors visit UC Santa Barbara on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. before heading to Long Beach State on Sunday at 2 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on Big West.TV.
CSUN enters the final week of the conference season needing two wins to stay alive for the Big West Tournament. The top four teams in the conference will advance to the tournament set to take place at UC Irvine starting Nov. 1.
In the standings, the Matadors are in eighth place with six points but they are just four points away from the fourth spot. UC Irvine sits in first place with 14 points followed by Long Beach State (13 points), UC Santa Barbara (12 points), UC Davis (10 points), Hawai'i (nine points), UC Riverside (eight points) and Cal Poly (seven points). Cal State Fullerton (one point) has been eliminated from tournament contention. The Matadors cannot catch UC Irvine or Long Beach State but can still finish anywhere from third to ninth in the league. CSUN owns the tiebreaker with UC Riverside but does not own tiebreakers with UC Davis, Hawai'i or Cal Poly. UC Irvine and Cal Poly are the only teams in the league that will play one match this week.
The Matadors dropped a pair of matches last week to slip to 2-4 in conference play. UC Irvine posted a 3-0 home win over CSUN on Thursday while UC Davis collected a 1-0 victory in overtime on Senior Day last Sunday. CSUN and UC Davis played to a scoreless 90 minutes of action before the Aggies prevailed with a goal in the 91st minute.
Senior Marissa Favela has an opportunity to move up on the all-time CSUN scoring list this week. Currently tied for eighth all time in school history with 12 career goals, Favela can move up to seventh place with one more goal and up to sixth place with three more goals. With 76 career appearances, senior defender Lindsay Kutscher will enter the Matadors' all-time career Top 10 matches played list with her next appearance. Kutscher would move up seventh place on the list with two more appearances.Â
Favela also enters this week tied for sixth in the Big West with five goals. Sophomore Bethany Fitzsimmons is second on the team with three goals followed by fellow sophomore Amy Aquino with two tallies. In net, freshman Amanda Delgado has posted a 1.07 goals against average with 40 saves and three shutouts in 10 starts.
UCSB leads the all-time series with the Matadors 15-9-1. The two teams battled to a 1-1 tie last season at Matador Soccer Field with Aquino scoring the Matadors' lone goal. CSUN has recent success against the Gauchos, winning five of the last seven meetings including three straight in Santa Barbara. Two seasons ago, CSUN earned a 1-0 win at UCSB behind a golden goal from Cynthia Sanchez. The last seven decisions between the two teams have all been decided by one goal.
The Matadors trail the all-time series with Long Beach State 13-8-3. After dropping four straight in the series, the Matadors played to a pair of draws last season including a 1-1 tie at Long Beach. The trio of Kirsten Von Meter, Marissa Favela and Kutscher all hit the net against the 49ers last season. Over the last eight meetings between the two teams, four matches have gone to overtime while six games have been decided by one goal. CSUN is seeking its first win at George Allen Field since 2012, and its first victory overall in the series since 2013.

The Gauchos enter the week with an 11-6 record and 4-2 mark in Big West play. UCSB leads the Big West in goals (28), shots (241), shots on goal (104) and corner kicks (103) while the team is second in assists (21), GAA (0.92) and shutouts (7).
Junior Shaelan Murison is second in the Big West with 10 goals, 24 points and four assists while senior Mallory Hromatko is tops in the league in assists (6). A total of 11 different Gauchos have hit the net this season. In front of the net, junior Hanna DeWeese has posted a 0.94 GAA with 46 saves and four shutouts.

The 49ers are sporting a 9-5-2 record with a 4-1-1 conference mark. Long Beach State is tops in the conference in assists (27), second in shots on goal (101) and third in goals (24). Prior to facing the Matadors, the 49ers visit UC Davis on Thursday afternoon. The 49ers can clinch the Big West regular season crown with two victories this week.
Senior Ashley Gonzales leads the conference with five goals to go with two assists while fellow senior Dana Fujikuni has scored four times and dished out four assists. The 49ers boast 12 different players with goals this season. Senior goalkeeper Imani McDonald has amassed a 0.99 GAA, 61 saves and three shutouts on the year.
