Matadors Conclude Season with 3-1 Loss at Long Beach State
10/28/2018 4:37:00 PM | Women's Soccer
LONG BEACH, Calif.---The 2018 season concluded for CSUN Women's Soccer (6-9-1, 2-6 BWC) on Sunday as the Matadors dropped a 3-1 decision to Long Beach State at George Allen Field. Amy Aquino notched her third goal of the season off passes from seniors Christina Nixon and Lindsay Kutscher. With the win, LBSU (10-5-3, 5-1-2 BWC) won the Big West regular season championship and No. 1 seed in next weekend's Big West Tournament.
"They made some plays on the box, we made some plays on the box. Their shots went in and ours didn't," said head coach Keith West. "It was an entertaining game today. Long Beach State has a good side. We played hard. We didn't have much to play for today, but to play the way we did, I'm proud of them."
The Matadors were out-shot 13-10 including 9-3 in shots on goal. Bethany Fitzsimmons and Nixon led the Matadors with two shots apiece.
Â
Long Beach State came out quickly in the early going to stake to the early lead. Amanda Delgado was able to stop a pair of early shots including an attempt from Ashley Gonzales from the left side of the box. Shortly after Delgado saved a second shot from Gonzales, the Long Beach State forward would find the net. Playing the ball into the box, Katie Pingel found Gonzales who finished at the far left post.
Â
LBSU doubled its lead in the 32nd minute, this time off a corner kick. Off the set piece, Chloe Froment delivered a corner kick from the left side that curved toward the goal. After a deflection off a pair of players in the box, the ball bounced into the net.
Â
Trailing by a pair, CSUN would respond a minute later. Following a Long Beach State foul, the Matadors played the ball down the right side. Kutscher delivered a pass to her left down toward the right corner. From there, Nixon sent in a long cross into the Matador box where a streaking Aquino finished from less than five yards to cut the deficit in half.
Â
The Matadors nearly evened the match in the 41st minute as Kutscher corralled a cross at the left near post but her header was saved by Imani McDonald.
After intermission, Michaela Giordano took the first shot of the second half, however her shot sailed high. Delgado added to her save total with a pair stops off the feet of Taylor Bistline and Gonzales. Moments later, Long Beach State went back on the attack leading to a CSUN handball just outside the 18-yard line. Kaylee Ramirez took the free kick from roughly the 19-yard mark and hit the right corner of the net to push her team's lead to 3-1.
The Matadors continued to battle down the stretch as Marissa Favela, Nixon and Fitzsimmons all missed shots. Nixon took the final shot of the day in the 89th minute from the right wing, but her shot cleared the crossbar by inches.
Â
"I felt like last year the ball always bounced our way," added West. "This year, I think from the very first game, I could tell the ball wasn't bouncing our way. I'm a big fan of energy, and I felt our team had inconsistent energy at times. But we have a wonderful group, they're unbelievable people and students. I'm proud to be their coach and to be at Northridge. Hopefully, they take some of these memories we shared together and cherish them like I will."
Today's match represented the final collegiate game for the Matador senior class. Five seniors, which include Kirsten Von Meter, Nixon, Favela, Giordano and Kutscher all started in their final match while Destinney Duron saw 18 minutes off the bench. Unable to play all season due to injury, Katelyn Von Meter also wrapped up her collegiate career along with backup goalkeeper Savannah Horvath.
In the CSUN record books, Kutscher concludes her stellar career tied for seventh all time with Jasmine Pratt (2007-10), Brielle Slepicoff (2008-11) and Lyndsey Preston (2012-15) in matches played with 78. Favela leaves the Matadors tied for eighth all time with Susie Mischenko (2004-07) and Heidi Farran (2007-11) with 12 career goals.Â
