10/30/2018 10:19:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Senior Aeryn Owens and junior Morgan each had 13 kills to lead the CSUN Matadors to a 3-1 victory over UC Riverside Tuesday in a Big West Conference match at The Matadome.
The 25-19, 25-23, 22-25, 25-19 win snaps a five-match skid for the Matadors who improve to 7-17 overall and 3-9 in the Big West. The visiting Highlanders slip to 7-15 to overall and 2-8 in conference play.

COACH JEFF STORKÂ SAID
"We outscored them and we kept our errors to a minimum which are the two things you need to do; produce more points and not give your opponent quite as many. We had a good blocking night and our hitting efficiency was ok. We're still looking for more point production out of more players but the good thing is we're putting ourselves into position to do that. This win will build some confidence and I think this team is capable of winning a good portion of these upcoming matches at the end of the year."Â
SET 1
The Matadors dominated the opening set, hitting .455 to .189 for the visitors. An Owens kill gave CSUN an early 5-3 lead before UCR rallied behind a 7-2 run to take a 10-7 lead. A Highlander service error cut the lead to 10-8 and an ensuing 4-1 Matador run put CSUN back in front 12-11 following a Dragovic and Salone co-block. Neither team led by more than one until an Erin Indermill setter dump sparked an 8-1 run CSUN run. UCR saved one set point at 24-18 before a Dragovic kill ended the set 25-19.
SET 2
The visitors held leads of 9-6 and 13-8 in the second set before a 4-0 Matador run cut the lead to 15-14. UCR quickly built the lead back to three at 18-15 when CSUN used a 4-0 run to force a Highlander timeout at 19-18. Three straight Highlander points out of the timeout put the visitors back in front 21-19. Still trailing by two at 23-21, the Matadors took advantage of a pair of UCR hitting errors along with kills from Dragovic and Owens to close the set on a 4-0 run.
SET 3
Neither team led by more than two points until the Highlanders got a kill from Yuliya Ushakova to open up a 17-14 cushion. Three straight Matador points knotted the score before a 4-1 UCR run looked to put the visitors comfortably in front 21-18. Another 3-0 CSUN run forced a Highlander timeout at 21-21 but UCR was able to regain control of the set by outscoring the Matadors 4-1 down the stretch to pull out the 25-22 win.
SET 4
A pair of UCR hitting errors capped a set opening 8-4 CSUN run which forced the visitors into an early timeout. An Owens kill maintained a four-point Matador lead (11-7) before the Highlanders took advantage of three straight CSUN miscues to cut the lead to one at 11-10. The Matadors still led 14-12 when Nevarez and Salone teamed up for another block propelling CSUN on a set clinching 5-0 run that gave the Matadors an insurmountable 19-12 cushion. CSUN's lead was never less than four points the rest of the way as the Matadors closed the match with the 25-19 win.Â
