Matadors Rally to Defeat Cal State Fullerton, 2-1
10/7/2018 7:34:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (5-5-1, 1-2-0 BWC) scored twice within a 1:39 span in the second half to upend Cal State Fullerton, 2-1, on Sunday evening at Matador Soccer Field. Marissa Favela netted her team-best fourth goal of the season while Amy Aquino nailed her second game winner of the year.
"I really feel the team as a whole had one mission and one goal tonight. They gave an exorbitant amount of energy, and they went for it the whole way," said head coach Keith West. "We've been talking about it the whole year, consistency. I think throughout the year, I don't know if we've known exactly who we are. We did some things this week. We had some good chats, some good conversations and good training sessions. We just started competing. It's amazing when you get everybody competing and playing for each other and have a common goal. It's pretty awesome to watch."
In a rematch of last season's Big West Tournament Championship, the Titans would take the early lead in the 12th minute on Sunday. Off a corner kick, Callie Petrey-Juarez delivered a pass near the center of the box. After a CSUN deflection, Kristin Swales found the ball from about a yard from the goal. The CSUN defense attempted to stop the shot but Swales would finish the play, giving the Titans a 1-0 edge.
Trailing by a goal early, the Matadors looked for the equalizer for nearly the whole match. CSUN pressed the Titan defense and collected six shots in the first period but could not find the net. Favela nearly evened the match in the 39th minute as she found room from roughly 25 yards out. Her shot though would go just inches above the crossbar.
After out-shooting the Titans 6-2 in the first half, the Matadors kept the pressure on in the second half as they out-shot Fullerton 8-3. Destinney Duron shot wide of the net in the 53rd minute while Amy Aquino missed twice moments later. The Matadors later earned a throw-in near the left corner in the 78th minute. Duron would send the ball near the left post where a Fullerton defender deflected the pass. The ball bounced right toward an open Bethany Fitzsimmons who fired at the net. After a Fullerton player got a foot on the ball, Favela swooped in and kicked the ball just beyond the goal line to even the match at 1-1.
With momentum on their side, the Matadors looked for the go-ahead goal less than two minutes later. Playing the ball up the left sideline, Alexis White crossed the ball inside the box to Aquino at about the 12-yard mark. Aquino rifled in a left-footed shot that snuck inside the right post to put the Matadors on top.
The Matadors' defense held serve over the final minutes, surrendering just one shot down the stretch. Nano Oronoz took the Titans' final shot of the match in the 82nd minute but her shot went wide right.
With her second-half goal, Favela moved into a 10th place tie with Melissa Cleal (1999-02) on the Matadors' all-time career scoring list with 11 goals. White's assist was her first of her career along with her first point. Fitzsimmons also picked up her first career assist on Favela's game-tying strike.
CSUN concludes its three-match homestand next Sunday against UC Riverside. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. The match will be streamed live on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health.
