Matadors Drop Season Finale at Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Senior Aeryn Owens had a team-high seven kills in her final collegiate match but the CSUN Matadors fell to Long Beach State in straight sets in the season finale for both teams Saturday at the Walter Pyramid.
Set scores were 25-19, 25-14, 25-13 as the Matadors finish the season at 8-20 overall and 4-12 in the Big West. The host 49ers finish with a record of 16-13 overall and 8-8 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• With seven kills against the Beach, Owens finishes her CSUN career with 1,555 kills. The senior from Rancho Cucamonga, who also added three digs and a pair of blocks, caps her career ranked second only to Laura Walter in school history. Walter holds the school record with 1,694 kills from 1998-2001.
• A trio of Matador hitters added five kills apiece, as junior Brianna Johnson hit a team-high .400 on 10 swings. Freshmen Lexi McLeod (.100) and Nicole Nevarez (.053) also had five kills with each player chipping in four digs.Â
• Senior setter Erin Indermill narrowly missed a double-double in her final CSUN appearance as she posted 15 assists and eight digs while fellow senior Kristey Markle led CSUN with 12 digs giving her 824 digs in her CSUN career.
• The 49ers out-hit the Matadors .362 (49-11-105) to .087 (26-17-103) and also had a 10.0 to 4.0 edge in blocks.
• For Long Beach State, Tyler Spriggs was one of two Beach hitters in double figures with a match-high 18 kills on .515 hitting.
SET 1
The Matadors dropped seven of the first eight points in the opening set before battling back to get within three (13-10) following an Owens kill. After an Indermill service error, a Johnson kill sparked a  Matadors on a 3-0 run which cut the Long Beach lead to 14-13. CSUN was within one three more times, the last at 17-16, when three straight Beach points extended the lead to 20-16. But a Morgan Salone kill started another 3-0 Matador run which again cut the lead to one at 20-19. CSUN however would not score again and dropped the set 25-19.Â
SET 2
Spriggs connected for a pair of kills in the early going as the hosts built a 4-1 lead. A Nevarez kill capped a 3-1 CSUN run which trimmed the lead to 5-4 before Long Beach outscored the Matadors 6-1 over the next seven points to open up an 11-5 lead. CSUN remained within six points at 15-9 before the hosts put the set out of reach with a 6-2 run. Leading 24-14, Long Beach sealed the set on a Markle service error.

Seeking their first lead of the night, the Matadors nearly erased a 9-5 Long Beach State lead. After kills from Salone and Owens, along with a 49er hitting error, pulled CSUN to within 9-8, the 49ers engineered a 7-0 run to open up an insurmountable 16-8 lead. Down 17-9, Owens connected for what would be the final kill of her career pulling the Matadors within seven. CSUN would get no closer however and dropped the set 25-13 and the match 3-0.Â
