FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Conditions permitting, CSUN Men's Basketball opens up a short two-game road trip on Saturday at Pepperdine with tip off slated for 7 p.m. The game will stream live on TheW.TV while Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister will be on the call in an audio broadcast on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health. With wildfires in the Malibu area, check back to GoMatadors.com for updates on any scheduling changes or postponements.
The Matadors opened up the 2018-19 campaign last Tuesday as CSUN fell to New Mexico 87-84 in a thrilling season opener. The teams traded 13 leads including nine in the second half. CSUN would erase an 84-80 lead with 34 seconds left to even the game late. After graduate Cameron Gottfried scored on a driving layup, CSUN forced a turnover, leading to game-tying jumper from freshman Lamine Diane with six seconds on the clock. The Lobos' Anthony Mathis though would hit a game-winning 3-pointer off the glass to down the Matadors.
Making his collegiate debut, Diane scored a game-high 34 points on 15-of-28 shooting to go with seven rebounds and four steals. Sophomore Terrell Gomez added 21 points and four 3-pointers. Starting in their first game at CSUN, freshman Elijah Harkless filled up the stat sheet with six rebounds, five points and four steals while freshman Michael Ou had six points and three rebounds, and Gottfried picked up six rebounds, four points and two assists.
All freshmen on the team, Darius Brown II chipped in with six points and three steals, freshman Jared Pearre grabbed five rebounds and scored three points, and Teddy Ochieng pulled down three rebounds. Sophomore Alex Sokol made his first career basket in the game, finishing with five points.Â
Diane's season debut against the Lobos will go down as one of the top performances in team history. His 34 points are the most scored by a freshman or a player making their debut in Matador history while his 15 field goals tied Lenny Daniel (2009-11) for the most in a single game in the team's Division I era. Diane is the first Matador to score at least 34 points in a game since Josh Greene tallied 37 against Hawai'i in March 2013. His scoring total was the fifth-most on opening night across all of Division I basketball.
Pepperdine leads the all-time series with the Matadors 10-8, winning seven of 10 meetings at home. The Waves have won the last two games in the series but the teams have not played since Dec. 2015. The Matadors dropped a 70-55 decision at The Matadome in their last game with the Waves. Pepperdine defeated the Matadors 66-56 in the teams' last contest at Firestone Fieldhouse in Dec. 2014. CSUN's last win at Pepperdine took place in 2011 with a 73-70 triumph.Â
A Closer Look at Pepperdine
The Waves (1-0) earned a season-opening victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills, 100-66, on Wednesday evening. The team was picked to finish eighth in the West Coast Conference, according to a preseason coaches poll. Pepperdine is coming off a 6-26 season in 2017-18. Head coach Lorenzo Romar is entering his first season at the helm of the Waves. No stranger to the CSUN coaching staff, Romar worked with Matador head coach Mark Gottfried on Jim Harrick's coaching staff at UCLA where the trio would win a National Championship in 1995.
Four Waves scored in double figures in the win over the Toros, led by senior Eric Cooper Jr. with 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Sophomore Jade' Smith scored 18 points and senior Darnell Dunn posted 17 points in the game while sophomore Colbey Ross registered 15 points and seven assists. Junior Kameron Edwards led the Waves in scoring last season at 14.7 points per game while Ross averaged 14.0 points.
