CSUN Wins Third Straight, Downs Morgan State 94-86
12/29/2018 9:39:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Sophomore Terrell Gomez tallied a career-high 29 points as CSUN Men's Basketball (6-8) defeated Morgan State 94-86 on Saturday evening at The Matadome. Freshman Lamine Diane posted his seventh double-double this season, registering 16 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and five blocks while freshmen Darius Brown II and Rodney Henderson Jr. had 13 points apiece.
The Matadors have won three-straight games for the first time since 2017 and have already matched their entire win total from last season. CSUN has also won its most non-conference games since the 2013-14 campaign.
"We've won three in a row and for us that's a good thing," said head coach Mark Gottfried. "We just got to try and keep getting better and we can't be a team that's complacent with winning. We're trying to climb the ladder and we're starting at the bottom. But our guys are playing with confidence right now.
"We had a game where everybody stepped up and did something different to help us win," added Gottfried. "Lamine wasn't great offensively but he rebounds the ball. Terrell makes some big shots. Cameron I thought played really well again and made big shots for our team. So a lot of good things happened tonight."
CSUN shot 51.6 percent from the field and knocked down 8-of-21 from 3-point range (38.1 percent) while the Bears were held to 40.0 percent shooting but shot 6-of-12 from beyond the arc (50.0 percent). The Matadors also won the rebounding battle, 46-43, and finished with a 19-11 advantage in assists. CSUN collected 11 blocks in the game, which are the most by a Matador team since blocking 12 against Montana State in Nov. 2014.
The teams would exchange the lead 11 times in the first half. Neither side led by more than three points until the Matadors went on a 9-0 run to take a 25-16 lead. Gomez scored the ball with regularity in the period, knocking down 9-of-14 shots to post 24 points.
Gomez hit one of his four 3-pointers in the first half at the 5:15 mark to extend the CSUN lead to 34-22. The Bears would trim the deficit to six points with two minutes to go before the Matadors scored six-straight points, highlighted by a Gomez four-point play. After Martez Cameron scored a late basket, the Matadors led 46-37 at the break.
In the second half, Diane made back-to-back baskets to put the Matadors ahead 57-47 at the 15:47 mark. Moments later, Sherwyn Devonish-Prince Jr. scored six-straight Morgan State points to help spearhead a 10-3 run. Seeing its lead trimmed down to three points, CSUN answered with an 8-0 run, capped off by another 3-pointer from Gomez to push the lead to 71-60.
The Bears though would not go away quietly. Morgan State forged a 14-5 spurt that brought the Bears within 76-74 with 6:47 left to play. With the lead down to two, Brown responded with a 3-pointer on the ensuing Matador possession. The lead stood at 79-76 before the Matadors went on a 13-4 run to finally create some distance. Cameron Gottfried nailed a crucial 3-pointer at the 2:27 mark followed by a layup from Gomez that gave CSUN a 92-80 lead. Diane would hit two free throws in the final minute to ice the game for the Matadors.
Gottfried nearly missed a double-double as he finished with 11 points and nine rebounds to go with five assists. Freshman Micheal Ou added seven points, nine rebounds and two blocks.
For the Bears, Stanley Davis led the team with 25 points while Devonish-Prince Jr. chipped in with 22 points.
The Matadors conclude their road non-conference schedule at San Diego State next Tuesday on New Year's Day. Tip off is slated for noon.
