LIHUE, Hawai'i - Senior Felix Mory fired an opening round 69 and is tied for seventh after the opening round of the John Burns Intercollegiate Thursday at Wailua Golf Course.
Mory, who has three top-10 finishes already this season, is four shots off the pace set by UNLV's Shintaro Ban who carded a seven-under 65 on Thursday. Mory had five birdies and just two bogeys in his opening round 69 which matches his second lowest round of the season.Â
"Felix played well as he usually does, but we're not going to succeed as a one-man show," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "Even though we didn't play great, if we can put a good round together tomorrow we can move up.The wind picked up later in the round but that's really no excuse, we're just not playing very consistent golf right now."
As a team, CSUN is tied for 16th at 13-over 301. Six ranked teams are among the 20-team field with UNLV out to a 13-stroke lead at 18-under 270.Â
Also for the Matadors, Luis Calderon is tied for 69th after posting a first round four-over 76, his low round of the season. Calderon had five bogeys but countered with a single birdie to get back to 76.
Trym Falch is a stroke back in a tie for 88th at five-over 77 after posting two birdies but also had had a pair of double bogeys. Despite an eagle three on the par five first hole, Michael Zhang is tied for 107th at seven-over 79. Zhang also had a birdie at No. 9 but struggled with seven bogeys.
Gabriel Barnes and Tomas Skajem, who is competing as an individual, rounded out the Matador scoring as each is tied for 119th at 11-over 83.
The Matadors will be paired with UC Santa Barbara, Northern Colorado and Hawai'i for the second round, teeing off from the 13th, 14th and 15th holes at 8 a.m. local time.
