CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif.—No. 12/13 Arizona took advantage of three CSUN errors to score seven unearned runs as the Wildcats defeated the Matadors 8-0 Friday afternoon.
Â
Arizona scored one run in the top of the first without the benefit of a hit. The Wildcats recorded back-to-back walks to open the frame. A one-out CSUN error led to the Wildcats loading the bases. Alyssa Palomio struck out, but a Matador passed ball allowed Jenna Kean to score on the play. Reyna Creighton walked to load the bases before Joelle Krist flew out to left.
Â
Krist led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk. Malia Martinez's sacrifice bunt attempt was misplayed by the CSUN defense, allowing both runners to reach safely. Carli Campbell, Arizona's leading hitter, attempted to put down a sacrifice bunt. Jocelin Soto, the CSUN third baseman threw to Savannah Horvath, the Matadors' shortstop at third to retire Krist. Kean struck out looking. With the count 1-2, Reyna Carranco doubled for the first Arizona hit, driving in both runners on the play.
Â
Jessie Harper followed with a two-run home run that grazed off Journey Rojas' glove in left field. Dejah Mulipola doubled off of CSUN reliever Megan Stevens. Palomino followed with a two-run home run to right to make it 7-0. Creighton singled up the middle to bring up Krist who reached on the third CSUN error of the game. Martinez struck out to conclude the inning.
Â
Campbell opened the fifth with a single. Kean walked. Carranco flew out to left before Harper singled up the middle for the final run of the day. The Wildcats posted seven hits. Mackenzie Babbitt posted the lone CSUN hit, a two-out single in the second. The Matadors' pitchers walked six. Arizona pitcher Taylor McQuillan improved to 8-1 on the year. She struck out four and walked one.
Â
"You can't give up any freebies to a good team," said CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers. "We had some errors and walks. When we went at their hitters, we saw good things happen. There were a couple of batters that changed the momentum of the game and it got away from us. We have things to build on."
Â
The Matadors (4-8) take on BYU (4-8) Friday night with a scheduled start of 8 p.m.
