Jillian James carried a no-hitter for seven innings, but BYU scored eight times in the extra frame as the Cougars defeated CSUN 8-0 Friday night
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif.—Jillian James carried a no-hitter for seven innings, but BYU scored eight times in the extra frame as the Cougars defeated CSUN 8-0 Friday night.
Â
CSUN loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the second before Carissa Sherman popped out to the shortstop. The Matadors would leave a runner on in scoring position in the third. BYU would strand a runner at second in the top of the fourth.
Â
Kenedee Jamerson led off the bottom of the fourth with a single. Juilanna Martinez battled back from 0-2 in the count to work out a walk. Arissa Paulson struck out Ty Cueva. She also struck out Jessica LaPierre. BYU catcher Libby Sugg tried to pick Martinez off at first, but throw was high. The error allowed both runners to advance. Paulson got Sherman to ground out to third to complete the inning.
Â
Savannah Horvath led off the CSUN fifth with a single to left. Kira Cauley grounded into a 5-4 fielder's choice that forced Horvath out at second. Megan Stevens popped out to second before Journey Rojas singled through the left side. Jamerson grounded out to end the frame.
Â
Lexie Tarrow walked to lead off the Cougars' seventh. Sugg attempted to put down the sac bunt. She popped it up in the air where CSUN catcher Jessica LaPierre caught the ball. She threw down to first to complete the double play.
Â
The score remained 0-0 after seven. Using the international rule, Alexa Strid was placed at second to get the BYU eighth underway. Caitlyn Alldredge successfully sacrificed Strid to third. Allie Hancock broke up the no-hitter with a double to right that plated Strid. Ashley Godfrey walked. Brooke Vander Heide reached on an error to load the bases. Rylee Jensen singled up the middle to drive in two runs for a 3-0 lead.
Â
Taylor Troost relieved James to face Briielle Breland. Breland singled to left to drive in the fourth BYU run. Tarrow grounded out to third for the second out. A Troost wild pitch allowed Jensen to score. Sugg singed in Breland for a 6-0 score. Strid homered to left to further increase the score. James came back in as Alldredge worked out an infield single. Hancock worked out a 14-pitch walk. Stevens relieved James to face Godfrey and she induced a ground back to her for the final out.
Â
With Stevens placed on second to begin the CSUN eighth, Rojas flew out to right. Paulson Jamerson walked on four pitches. Martinez lined out to third. Cueva reached on an error to load the bases. LaPierre struck out to end the game.
Â
"I thought (Jillian) did a good job of coming back from the first game today," said CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers. "To throw a no-hitter for as long as she did, she did a great job. We were able to get runners on, but we didn't come up with the big hits. Hopefully, it will fall in our direction tomorrow."
Â
BYU (5-9) would end the game with six hits. CSUN left 12 baserunners on compared to only four for the Cougars.
Â
The Matadors (4-9) take on No. 19 California (12-1) at 12 p.m. Saturday before turning around to take on LIU Brooklyn (3-8) at 2:30 p.m.
