Gomez Named Freshman of the Year, Dawson Earns All-Big West

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball's guard Terrell Gomez was named Big West Freshman of the Year and senior forward Tavrion Dawson capped off his collegiate career with an All-Big West Second Team honor, the league office announced Monday.

Hailing from Los Angeles, Gomez started all 30 games this season as a true freshman with the Matadors. Gomez led the Big West in 3-point percentage (46.1) and minutes per game (34.1), and finished seventh in assists per game (3.6). The speedy guard also scored 11.7 points per game and shot 80.0 percent from the free throw line while registering a 1.8 assists to turnover ratio.

His production increased in Big West play as he dished out the third-most assists per game (4.1) to go with 12.6 points. Along with scoring a career-high 24 points at Long Beach State on Jan. 10, Gomez posted his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 assists against UC Davis on Feb. 1. Gomez also shot 89.2 percent from the foul line against Big West foes.

Gomez finished with the second-highest 3-point percentage (46.1) and the fifth-most 3-point field goals made (65) in a single season in team history.
Originally from Long Beach, Dawson logged a career-high 33.0 minutes per game as he finished fifth in the Big West in points (16.7) and seventh in rebounds per game (6.6). Dawson also posted personal bests in points per game, assists per game (2.0) and blocks (22). In the Big West, Dawson was the only player to average at least 16.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists during the year.

As impressive as Dawson was during the season, he saved his best for Big West play. Dawson registered 17.3 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game to go with six double-doubles against conference opponents. He also scored in double figures in 15 of 16 games.

Cementing himself as one of the top Matadors in team history, Dawson wrapped up his CSUN career tied for 10th all time in scoring with 1,221 points. He also finished eighth in career blocks (50), ninth in field goal attempts (968) and 10th in field goals made (456). During the season, Dawson became the 19th Matador in school history surpass 1,000 points, and just the 11th player to record at least 1,000 points and 500 rebounds (559).

Dawson concludes his CSUN career with two-straight All-Big West Team honors as he was named an Honorable Mention last season. Gomez becomes the third Matador in team history to earn the Big West Freshman of the Year award, joining Stephan Hicks (2012) and Ian Boylan (2002).Â
