NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—In her final collegiate at-bat, Savannah Horvath homered with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give CSUN a 6-5 victory over No. 20 Long Beach State in the 2018 season finale for the Matadors.
Â
The 49ers (42-12, 16-5 BWC) jumped out to an early lead by scoring four times in the top of the first. Three of the runs were unearned due to two-out CSUN error that was committed with the bases loaded.
Â
Jessica Alexander walked with one out in the bottom of the first. Savannah Horvath was hit by a Cielo Meza pitch to bring up Megan Stevens. Stevens was also hit by a pitch which loaded the bases. Devyn Magnett relieved Meza. Her first batter was Journey Rojas. Rojas tied the game with her fifth home of the season, the first grand slam for the freshman from Pomona.Â
Â
"I wasn't sure how we were going to bounce back after that start," said CSUN head coach Tiaria Flowers. "For Journey to come up with a hit like that it was huge."
Â
Horvath singled to lead off the CSUN third. With two outs, Magnett uncorked a wild pitch. Horvath hustled and took third on the play. Corrin Green put the Matadors into the lead with a two-out that plated Horvath.
Â
Julia Lombardi tied the game on the first pitch of the sixth when she homered to left. Horvath hit the walk-off homer on the first pitch she faced against Magnett in the seventh. It was her second hit of the day. Horvath, who ends her career with 51 career home runs (a CSUN record and the second most in Big West history). She scored three runs on the day.
Â
"It was an awesome way for Sav to end her career," Flowers said. "It is really nice for an athlete such as her to get the payoff on senior day like that."
Â
Jillian James tossed a complete game five-hitter. She struck out three and walked two. Mackenzie Babbitt was 2-for-4 for the Matadors.
Â
"JJ struggled here and there, but she kept going after hitters," Flowers said. Â
Â
CSUN ends the season with a 23-36 overall record, 8-13 in the Big West.
