Matadors Top USC 9-3, Take Weekend Series
5/25/2018 9:30:00 PM | Baseball
LOS ANGELES, Calif.---Albee Weiss homered for the 19th time this season as CSUN Baseball (28-29) earned a series win over USC with a 9-3 triumph on Friday evening at Dedeaux Field. Weiss finished 3-for-5 with three RBI while Brandon Bohning went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Kyle Barret and Alvaro Rubalcaba posted two hits apiece. Jayson Newman (3-2) earned the victory by tossing 3.1 shutout innings in relief. The Matadors collected their seventh series win of the season (three or four games) and fourth over the last five weekends.Â
After the Matadors and Trojans battled in a pitcher's duel on Thursday, the teams would combine for 12 runs and 21 hits in game two of the series. Despite scoring in just two innings, the Matadors would post a pair of crooked numbers on the scoreboard to down the Trojans for the second-straight day.Â
CSUN sent 10 batters to plate in the first inning as the Matadors jumped on Trojan starter Quentin Longrie at the outset. Trevor Casanova got the Matadors' offense started with a one-out walk in the frame, bringing up Weiss who hammered a 2-0 pitch over the right center wall. Ahead 2-0, CSUN would be far from done in the frame. Kevin Riley reached on a fielding error then Nolan Bumstead worked a walk. Barret followed with a single to load the bases. After a wild pitch scored Riley, Joey Cooper legged out an RBI single to third base. Two batters later, with runners at the corners, the Matadors executed a double steal as Barret stole home to give the Matadors a 5-0 lead.Â
Isaiah Nunez retired the Trojans in order in the first inning but USC responded with three runs over the next two innings.
In the second, Brandon Perez roped an RBI single to plate Dillon Paulson. After Nunez stranded two runners to end the second inning, USC took advantage of a CSUNÂ miscue to plate two runs in the third. Stephen Dubb hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning to bring the Trojans within 5-3.Â
USC threatened again in the fifth, loading the bases with one out. Nunez gave up a leadoff single in the inning before he retired Blake Sabol. Newman entered the fray and surrendered a pair of singles to the left side. With the go-ahead run at first base, Newman would go to work on the mound and escape danger. He struck out Dubb swinging then forced Paulson to flyout to center field to end the inning.Â
Reliever Isaac Esqueda steadied the ship for USC with four-straight shutout innings. However, CSUN finally broke through in the sixth to open up a six-run lead. After Cooper reached on a leadoff walk, Rubalcaba stroked a double down the right field line. Bohning then followed with a double of own, plating two runs. Toerner singled through the right side to bring in Bohning, stretching the lead to five. Weiss capped off the scoring binge with another RBI single to put CSUN on top 9-3.Â
The Matadors' bullpen would hold on to the lead over the final innings. Newman found his groove on the mound and retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh innings. He set down 10 in a row at one point before giving up a two-out single to Paulson in the eighth. Blake Schriever finished off the Trojan eighth and Andrew Weston tossed a shutout ninth to seal the win.Â
Weiss is just the 13th Matador in team history to hit at least 19 home runs in a season and the first since Adam Kennedy (1995-97) and Jose Miranda (1996-97) accomplished the feat during the 1997 campaign. His 60 RBI this season are also the most since Ryan Pineda (2008-10) racked up 66 during the 2010 season.Â
The Matadors will conclude the 2018 season on Saturday afternoon against the Trojans. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.Â
