Matadors Conclude Road Trip at UCSB This Weekend

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (19-24, 7-8 BWC) heads up the central coast to take on UC Santa Barbara in the opener of a three-game series Friday at 3 p.m. The series will continue on Saturday at 2 p.m. and wrap up Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. All three games will air live on Big West.TV.Â

The Matadors are currently tied for sixth with UC Davis in the Big West standings, however they are just one game out of second place and three and a half games out of the top spot. Cal State Fullerton leads the Big West with a 9-3 record, followed by UC Irvine (8-7), Hawai'i (8-7), UC Santa Barbara (6-6) and Cal Poly (6-6). UC Riverside is in eighth place (5-7) and Long Beach State is in ninth (4-8).Â
CSUNÂ is coming off an impressive series win in Hawai'i last weekend. After dropping the opener, 5-3, the Matadors bounced back with a 12-7 win in game two and a 2-0 triumph in the rubber game on Sunday. The Matadors have won two road conference series in a single season for the first time since 2013.Â
Justin Toerner went 4-for-6 at the plate with seven RBI in game two of the series against the Rainbow Warriors. Toerner hit a grand slam in the fifth inning, giving CSUN an 8-4 lead that it would not relinquish. In the finale, Matt Acosta tossed the Matadors' first shutout of the season, a five-hitter, to help CSUN secure a series win. Trevor Casanova finished 4-for-7 at the plate in the series while Kevin Riley went 4-for-10 with two RBI.Â
In the Big West, Casanova remains the league leader in batting (.380), hits (62) and doubles (15). The Matador backstop has hit safely in the last 14 games and collected a hit in 36 of 43 contests. Eighth in the nation in home runs (15), Albee Weiss is tops in the conference in homers, RBI (48) and slugging percentage (.608) while he is tied for fifth in hits (51). Toerner is the Big West leader in triples (6) and Joey Cooper paces the conference with 18 hit-by-pitches. As a team, the Matadors lead their Big West counterparts in runs (270), RBI (257), extra base hits (144), total bases (687), hit by pitch (75), home runs (56) and slugging (.459).Â
Making his eighth-straight Friday start and ninth overall, junior right hander Walker Armstrong (1-4) is sporting a 3.90 ERA in 64 innings of work on the year. Junior left hander Isaiah Nunez (1-0) will make his sixth start of the season on Saturday as he comes in with a 3.43 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 44.2 innings. This reigning Big West Pitcher of the Week, Acosta (5-5) leads the team in wins to go with a 3.88 ERA. In Big West play, Acosta has lowered his ERA to 1.46 while hitters are managing just a .190 average.Â
Dating back to 1961, UCSB leads the all-time series with CSUN, 85-66-3. Last season, the Matadors took two of three games at home from the Gauchos in dramatic fashion as Nolan Bumstead hit a walk-off three-home run in the finale of the series that lifted CSUN to a 10-8 win. The series win over the Gauchos was the Matadors' first since 2011. CSUN has dropped the last three series at UCSB and seeks its first series victory at the road since 2010. The Gauchos swept the Matadors at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium two seasons ago. Toerner has a career .300 average (9-for-30) against UCSB while Kevin Riley hit .417 (5-for-12) with a home run and RBI in 2017.Â

The Gauchos are 21-18-1 this season including 16-8-1 at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. UCSB won two of three games with UC Riverside last weekend and posted a 9-5 win over CSU Bakersfield on Tuesday. As a team, the Gauchos are second in the Big West in triples (14) and stolen bases (37), and third in home runs (25) and walks (156). UCSB's pitching staff is posting a 4.10 ERA.Â
Freshman infielder Andrew Martinez is batting .308 with five home runs, 22 RBI and a .519 slugging percentage. The team's top run producer, sophomore outfielder Tommy Jew has driven in 30 runs to go with a .294 average and nine doubles. Junior infielder Clay Fisher is atop the Big West in stolen bases with 11 while he has collected 27 RBI and a .307 average.
