Armstrong Goes the Distance, CSUN Takes Series Opener at UCSB
5/4/2018 7:19:00 PM | Baseball
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.---Walker Armstrong tossed his second complete game of the season as CSUN Baseball (20-24, 8-8 BWC) defeated UC Santa Barbara 6-4 on Friday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. Armstrong allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on four hits to go with seven strikeouts. The Matadors' seven, eight and nine hitters in the lineup consisting of Alex Hull, Alvaro Rubalcaba and Brandon Bohning collected two hits apiece while Kevin Riley belted his seventh home run. Â
Coming off Matt Acosta's five-hit shutout at Hawai'i, the Matadors received another stellar effort from their starting pitcher. Armstrong went the distance for his first nine-inning complete game with the Matadors. Earlier this season, Armstrong threw eight innings in a complete game defeat at Missouri State.Â
UCSBÂ struck first on Friday and found early success against Armstrong. After the junior right hander retired the first two batters of the game, Tommy Jew stroked a solo home run down the right field line to give his team a one-run lead.Â
Riley would even the game in the top of the second inning with a leadoff home run but UCSB answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the frame. The first two batters reached to start the inning, giving Sam Cohen an opportunity to collect an RBI single. Jason Willow later cashed in on a sacrifice fly that put the Gauchos ahead 3-1. Armstrong escaped further trouble after Trevor Casanova threw out Cohen attempting to steal second base.Â
The Matadors would fight back into the game, scoring five runs over the next four innings. In the third, Bohning doubled to start the inning and later touched home plate on a sacrifice fly from Casanova.Â
CSUNÂ then moved in front in the fifth inning behind a pair of timely hits. After Bohning hit a leadoff single, Justin Toerner laid down a well-executed bunt to advance the runner. Casanova came to the plate next and roped a single through the left side to tie the game at 3-3. Two batters later, Nolan Bumstead came through with a two-out RBI single up the middle, putting the Matadors in front for the first time.Â
An inning later, the Matadors threatened again as Riley Conlan and Hull began the frame with singles. Rubalcaba followed suit with a single of his own, plating Conlan. Bohning then pushed the lead to 6-3 on an RBI groundout, scoring Hull from third base.Â
While the Matador bats came alive, Armstrong turned things around on the mound in a big way. After giving up the RBI single to Cohen in the second, Armstrong would not allow another baserunner until the seventh inning. The hurler retired 13 consecutive batters, five of which on strikeouts.Â
Thomas Rowan ended Armstrong's string with a leadoff home run to begin the seventh inning. However, Armstrong shook off the setback and set down the next six batters in a row. At one point on Friday, Armstrong retired 20 of 21 Gaucho hitters.Â
Nearly at 100 pitches, Armstrong marched back out for the ninth inning, trying to protect a two-run lead. Clay Fisher led off the frame with a groundout but Jew worked a walk to bring the tying run to the plate. Armstrong set down Rowan for the second out, however he would hit Drew Williams. Moments later, on his 115th pitch of the day, Armstrong forced Michael McAdoo to hit into a fielder's choice to end the ballgame.Â
CSUN's back-to-back complete games from Acosta and Armstrong are the team's first since Andrew Weston and Samuel Myers accomplished the feat on consecutive days last season against UC Riverside.Â
Casanova finished 1-for-4 on the day to extend his hitting streak to 15-straight games. The Matador backstop also threw out his 17th runner this season. Bohning, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, collected his 11th multiple-hit game on the year.Â
The Matadors go for the series victory at UCSB on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.Â
