Matadors Top CSUB 2-0, Set New Road Unbeaten Record
9/16/2018 9:23:00 PM | Women's Soccer
BAKERSFIELD, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (4-3-1) kept its unbeaten streak alive with a 2-0 victory over CSU Bakersfield on Sunday evening at Main Soccer Field. Bethany Fitzsimmons and Marissa Favela both collected their third goals of the season while Amanda Delgado recorded her second clean sheet. The Matadors have now set a new program record by going unbeaten in their last eight road matches, which dates back to October 2017.
The Matadors took a season-high 32 shots in the match, putting 11 attempts on goal while CSU Bakersfield finished with nine shots and three on goal. CSUN also enjoyed a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. A total of 25 fouls were called with the Matadors whistled for 15 of those fouls.
"All around I thought we played really well on the offensive end." said head coach Keith West. "Lulu [Kutscher] and Marissa [Favela] both had really good games, and overall we just had a great night. This was a good way for us to end non-conference play, and it gives us momentum heading into conference."
In the opening half, CSUN took three corner kicks in the first five minutes of play. Fitzsimmons missed the net twice in the first nine minutes of action, but she would get another chance minutes later to put the Matadors on top. Following a CSUB foul, Christina Nixon took a free kick from about 20 yards on the left wing. The ball was heading toward the net before goalkeeper Jordan Bertram knocked the ball away. Fitzsimmons cleaned up the play nicely from three yards out to give CSUN a 1-0 lead.
The Matadors played stingy defense throughout the first half, holding the Roadrunners to three shot attempts. Two of the Bakersfield's shots were blocked while Delgado made a save in the 28th minute off a shot from Sabrina Delgado.
After racking up 12 shots in the opening stanza, the Matadors collected 20 more attempts after intermission. The Matadors played the ball on CSUB's side of the field early in the second half, leading to a Nixon shot that was blocked. The ball went out of bounds, giving the Matadors a free kick. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Favela drove in the ball deep into the box where Bertram got a hand on the ball from inside the goal line. The ball would then hit the net, giving the Matadors a 2-0 edge.
CSUN continued to take it to the Roadrunners down the stretch of the second half, not allowing the opposition to get their offense in motion. Over an eight-minute stretch, the Matadors picked up eight shots, led by Favela who had three of her shots go wide. Fitzsimmons had both of her shots blocked in the stretch while Payton Jo Armijo put a shot on frame in the 83rd minute. Sadie Armijo took the Matadors' final shot of the night in the final minute but Bertram made a two-handed save.
On the backline, Lindsay Kutscher and Amanda Martin played the full 90 minutes while Kirsten Von Meter also went the distance in the midfield.
Both Fitzsimmons and Favela tallied seven shots and three shots on goal to lead the way for the Matadors. Favela, who has 10 career goals, is one strike away from cracking the Matadors' all-time career Top 10 goals scored list.
CSUN is unbeaten through its first five road matches this season (4-0-1). Prior to concluding last season, the Matadors went 2-0-1 in their final three road contests. The team had previously set a team record by going unbeaten over seven road matches from 2003 to 2004. Earlier this season, CSUN also set a program record by going unbeaten in 10-straight matches overall.
The Matadors will be off for the next 12 days before the opening Big West Conference play on the road. CSUN visits Cal Poly to open conference action on Friday, Sept. 28. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
