Cal Poly Edges CSUN 1-0 in Big West Opener
9/28/2018 9:41:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.---A goal in the 53rd minute proved to be the difference as CSUN Women's Soccer (4-4-1, 0-1 BWC) dropped their Big West opener to Cal Poly 1-0 on Friday evening at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. Goalkeeper Amanda Delgado racked up five saves in front of the net in the match. Payton Jo Armijo led the Matadors with five shots (two on goal) while Amy Aquino had three attempts.
The Mustangs out-shot the Matadors 18-15 in the contest as each squad racked up six shots on goal. After Cal Poly took of eight of the teams' combined 10 shots in the first half, the Matadors led in the second half in the category, 13-10. CSUN finished with four corner kicks compared to the Mustangs' three.
The teams battled to a standstill in the first half as neither side saw the ball hit the back of the net. Delgado was active early on, picking three saves in the first 14:05 of the match. Cal Poly would take seven shots in the first 20 minutes of action until the Matadors' defense buckled down and held the Mustangs to one shot over the final 25 minutes. Sydney Gilbert took the Matadors' first shot in the fourth minute but her attempt went high. Aquino also just missed the net in the 30th minute.
The second half took on the same form as the first with Cal Poly coming out as the aggressor in the opening minutes. After a pair of missed shots from Mackenzie George and Chelsea Barry, the Mustangs took advantage of a misplayed CSUN ball. With the ball played on the Matadors' side of the field, the Mustangs sent the ball near the top of the box. Playing on the backrow, Amanda Martin was unable to take control of the ball forcing Delgado to move away from her post and up to the top of the box. Between Martin and Delgado stood Jessica Johnson who quickly fired on the goal. Delgado blocked the shot but Sydney Knauer rebounded the ball nicely and scored on an open CSUN net.
Trailing by a goal, the Matadors frantically went on the attack looking for the equalizer. Moments after the goal, Armijo and Aquino put shots on frame within a three-minute stretch. In a matter of 15 seconds, the Matadors took three shots in the second half but each attempt was blocked away by the Mustang defense. Armijo nearly found the net in the 74th minute but goalkeeper Sophia Brown kept her team in front with a save. Brown also stopped shots from Marissa Favela, Michaela Giordano and Sydney Gilbert down the stretch en route to finishing with six saves.
Making her first career start, Gabriela Robles played the full 90 minutes on defense while Christina Nixon, Kirsten Von Meter, Amanda Martin and Lindsay Kutscher also saw every minute on Friday.
The Matadors return home on Sunday afternoon for their Big West home opener against Hawai'i. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. from Matador Soccer Field. The match will be streamed live on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health.
