Matadors Lose Heartbreaker to Hawai'i in OT
9/30/2018 7:42:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Shortly after heroics from Lindsay Kutscher, Hawai'i scored a goal in the 100th minute to defeat CSUN Women's Soccer (4-5-1, 0-2-0 BWC) 2-1 on Sunday evening at Matador Soccer Field. Kutscher netted her first goal of the season with two seconds remaining in regulation to force an overtime session. In front of the net, Amanda Delgado racked up four saves.
"[We were] inconsistent again. I thought at times we put a lot of energy but at times we were looking for brakes," said head coach Keith West. "With a young team, you're going to get that. It's tough because our seniors want more but everyone's got to give more. You can't get a win in the Big West Conference if you don't play for 90 minutes. The first five minutes, they popped us real quick and early, and I don't think we even played the whole first half. The second half we did much better with our energy and effort. Teams that make plays, teams that bring energy are going to do pretty well. That team over there is really good."
Hawai'i jumped on the Matadors in the early minutes of the match. Shortly after a missed shot from Leialoha Medeiros, the Rainbow Wahine earned a corner kick in the fourth minute. Off the set piece, Raisa Strom-Okimoto played it short and delivered a pass to Kiri Dale. From there, Dale found a streaking Strom-Okimoto on the left wing. Before the Matadors could close out, Strom-Okimoto found the right far post from 18 yards to put Hawai'i on top 1-0.
The Rainbow Wahine controlled the pace for most of the first half, out-shooting the Matadors 7-3. Delgado helped keep CSUN within striking distance though as she saved shots in the 25th and 41st minute. Her second save came in acrobatic fashion as she dove to her right and punched away a shot from Strom-Okimoto.
CSUN nearly evened the match in the 30th minute off a free kick. Nixon took the kick from 20 yards but smacked the center of the crossbar.
The Matadors continued to look for the equalizer for most of the second half with little success. Marissa Favela and Jennifer Anderson each missed shots from above the box, and later Sadie Armijo missed the goal with a high shot.
Fighting to the last second, the Matadors gained possession in the final minute of the period as Destinney Duron forced a turnover. Eventually, the Matadors gained a throw-in opportunity with less than 10 seconds left. Duron raced to the ball and fired it in from the left sideline. In a scramble inside the box, the ball was deflected to Kutscher who found herself open from five yards out. Kutscher would head the ball into the net with just two ticks on the clock to send the match into a extra time.
The teams battled in a back-and-forth overtime until the final minute. Hawai'i won the ball from midfield and played the ball down the right sideline. Daelenn Tokunaga would find Sara Lau with a long cross near the left post. Delgado stopped Lau's first shot but a second shot from Lau hit the back of the net from one yard out to win the match for Hawai'i.
The Rainbow Wahine finished with a 14-9 advantage in shots and a 6-2 lead in shots on goal. Hawai'i also earned seven corner kicks to the Matadors' three. A total of 22 fouls were called in the match with each side whistled for 11 apiece.
The Matadors look to regroup next Sunday as they host Cal State Fullerton at 5 p.m. The Big West match will be streamed live on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health.
