Matadors Defeat Pacific on Favela's Golden Goal
9/7/2018 9:37:00 PM | Women's Soccer
STOCKTON, Calif.---Senior Marissa Favela netted her second career golden goal in the 105th minute, lifting CSUN Women's Soccer (2-2-1) to a 1-0 win over Pacific on Friday evening at Knoles Field. In her first career start, Amanda Delgado racked up nine saves to help CSUN post its first shutout of the season.
"We played well at times, and at times we didn't play as well. It's hard to get a result on the road but we were able to get it done today," said head coach Keith West. "Amanda [Delgado] came up big for us and gave us a ton of confidence tonight. It was a team effort to get our first shutout of the season, and Amanda was a big part of it."
"The maturity of the group is strong," added West about his team's effort on the road. "The team is pretty young but when we're on the road, we're able to prep the team better. They're able to lock themselves into the games well on the road while at home there can be distractions."
The Tigers led the shot department, 25-15, but the Matadors put 11 of their shots on goal compared to Pacific who had with nine. CSUN was whistled for 17 fouls compared to Pacific's six. The teams finished with six corner kicks apiece.
Making her first career appearance with the Matadors, Delgado registered her first save in the third minute off a shot from Kendall Bietsch. Michaela Giordano notched CSUN's first shot on goal in the eighth minute while Sydney Gilbert and Christina Nixon also picked up shots minutes later. The Tigers nearly took the lead in the 18th minute as Beth Burgess hit the post from 15 yards. CSUN also withstood two more shots from Burgess and an attempt from Bryn Thorolfsdottir over the next two minutes.
The Matadors forced Megan Heslop to make six saves in the opening 45 minutes as CSUN continued to earn quality looks on the offensive end. The Tigers took the final two shots of the half including an attempt from Jenae Packard that smacked off the goal post. Following a late miss from Nikki Leishman, the match went into intermission scoreless.
In the early moments of the second half, Delgado would be tested but the freshman was up for the challenge. Delgado made five saves in the first 17 minutes of the period including a diving play to her right in the 51st minute where she punched the ball out of bounds. In the 63rd minute, Delgado prevented a Packard shot from smacking the net by hitting the ball over the crossbar.
The Tigers tallied 13 shots in the second half but Delgado would make eight saves to keep the opposition off the scoreboard. Meanwhile, the Matadors earned four shots at the net with similar success. Alyssa Aguilar put two shots on frame in the second half while Destinney Duron and Lindsay Kutscher also took shots but the match remained even.
The Matadors controlled the ball for most of the two overtime periods as they out-shot the Tigers 4-1. Heslop saved a shot from Favela in the 99th minute, forcing the match into a second overtime where CSUN finally broke through. After a yellow card was issued to the Tiger bench, Nixon would dribble the ball up the left wing and deliver a cross into a crowd inside the box. The ball was flicked by a defender before Favela cleaned up the play at the right near post from five yards out.
With the game winner, Favela has now netted three game-winning strikes in her CSUN career. Her goal on Friday was her first of the season.
The Matadors, who have played in three overtime matches in 2018, have scored golden goals in two of the last three matches. Amy Aquino has the other Matador golden goal on the year as she hit the net in the 100th minute against Portland State on Aug. 26.
Aguilar led the Matadors with three shots, all which were on goal. Nixon, Favela and Duron all collected two shots apiece. The trio of Nixon, Kutscher and Amanda Martin all played the full 105 minutes on the backline.
CSUN concludes its road trip this Sunday afternoon against Sacramento State. Kickoff is slated for noon.
