Five Score in Double Figures, CSUN Beats Long Beach State, 86-71
1/23/2019 9:35:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Led by 21 points from sophomore Terrell Gomez and a double-double from freshman Jared Pearre, CSUN Men's Basketball (9-12, 3-2 BWC) defeated Long Beach State 86-71 on Wednesday evening at The Matadome. Making the most of his first start of the season, Pearre tallied a career-high 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting and 10 rebounds to go with three assists and two blocks. Junior Rodney Henderson Jr. added 17 points while freshmen Lamine Diane and Darius Brown II chipped in with 14 and 12 points respectively.
After shooting below 42 percent in the first half, the Matadors shot at a 61.3 percent clip in the second half to finish 50.8 percent for the game. On the flip side, LBSU shot 48.3 percent on the night. CSUN went 8-of-21 from 3-point range (38.1 percent) while the opposition shot 8-of-16 (50.0 percent). The Matadors won the rebounding battle 36-28 and in the second chance points department, 18-4.
ACCORDING TO COACH MARK GOTTFRIED
"I'm excited because it was a really nice team win. A lot of guys did a lot of things well. Lamine was in foul trouble and I thought we played well in the first half without him. When he came back in, he let the game come to him. We had five guys in double figures. Jared was terrific today. It was a great game by him.
We probably can't get that [from Pearre] every night but if he can rebound for us that's a big plus for our team. We have a long way to go but it's sure nice to have a win where everyone contributed."
FIRST HALF
CSUN would have to play without the Big West's top scorer for most of the first as Diane was called for two fouls in the first 1:15 of the half. The Matadors scored the game's first six points before the Beach answered with an 8-0 run to pull ahead. The teams traded 12 leads in the first half with Gomez leading the way with 10 points. Diane re-entered the game at the 12:11 mark and promptly tied the game with a tip-in at 18-18. However, Diane would be whistled for his third foul at the 7:53 mark, forcing the Matadors to play the rest of the half without him.
The Beach led 33-29 with 4:19 left in the first half before the Matadors closed the half on a 9-0 run. Pearre threw down a dunk off a pass from Cameron Gottfried, and Gomez followed with a 3-pointer in transition that gave CSUN the lead. Gottfried hit a mid-range jumper to extend the lead before Gomez ended the half with a last-second layup to put CSUN ahead 38-33 after 20 minutes.
SECOND HALF
Long Beach State tallied the first five points to even the game but the Matadors reclaimed the lead after baskets from Diane and Gomez. Pearre continued to give the Beach fits on the glass as his tip-in extended the Matadors' lead to 46-40 at the 15:11 mark. LBSU constructed a 9-2 run to stake to a 51-50 lead after a free throw from Mason Riggins. However, the Matadors went back in front on a Diane jumper and would not surrender the lead the rest of the way.
Diane scored seven-straight points during one stretch to give CSUN a 55-51 lead. Gottfried then forced a steal leading to a Pearre finish on the other end to put CSUN up six with 9:53 to go. Moments later, Pearre brought down an offensive rebound and scored under the basket to stretch the lead to 65-57. After 3-pointers from Henderson Jr. and Brown, Pearre extended the lead to double digits on a layup with under four minutes to play. Henderson Jr. knocked down another 3-pointer a minute later and Gomez hit four free throws down the stretch to secure the win for the Matadors.
GAME NOTES
Pearre's double-double is the first of his career. His previous career bests in points and rebounds were eight and five respectively. Brown also finished with seven assists and six rebounds while Gottfried added six points, five rebounds and four assists off the bench.
Gomez moved up to sole possession of sixth place in team history with 143 career 3-pointers. The sophomore has now hit 78 3-pointers this season, which is tied with Josh Greene for the third most in a single season in team history.
For LBSU, Deishuan Booker scored a team-high 20 points.
