Matadors Notch 200th All-Time Win, Down Cal Poly 2-0
10/10/2019 9:37:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Riding first-half goals from junior Gabriella Hinojosa and freshman Cindy Arteaga, CSUN Women's Soccer (8-4-3, 2-1 Big West) handed Cal Poly a 2-0 defeat on a windy Thursday evening at Matador Soccer Field. The Matadors registered their seventh shutout of the season behind sophomore Amanda Delgado's three saves. With the win, the Matadors also notched their 200th all-time win in the 25-year history of the program.
The Mustangs finished with a 12-8 edge in shots but the Matadors posted more shots on goal at 4-3. CSUN also earned six corner kicks to Cal Poly's four. A total of 16 fouls were called in the match with 14 issued to CSUN. Alexis White was shown the yellow card in the 28th minute of the first half.
FIRST HALF
The Matadors wasted little time going on the attack in the early moments of the match. In the third minute, Bethany Fitzsimmons drove a shot from the right wing toward the left far post. Sophia Brown made an acrobatic save on a dive to her right but the ball stayed in play. Hinojosa rebounded the ball and tapped in a shot from less than eight yards into the right corner post to put CSUN on top. Aided by the wind, the Mustangs nearly evened the match moments later as Emily Talmi sent in a shot from the top of the box that Delgado stopped on a dive to her left. Sidra Bugsch and Kylie Rojas followed with missed shots while Jordan Patane hit the crossbar in the seventh minute.Â
Surviving the early barrage by the Mustangs, the Matadors doubled their lead in the 27th minute. Off a free kick from the right side, a looping kick went into the left side of the box. Cora Willcot would gather the ball and deposit a low pass into the center where Arteaga finished at the right corner of the net to give CSUN a 2-0 advantage.
SECOND HALF
The Mustangs outshot the Matadors 5-2 in the second half but could not break through against the stingy CSUN defense. Bugsch missed wide in the 50th minute while Rojas had her shot blocked in the 63rd minute. Delgado made a two-handed save on an attempt from Monserrat Hernandez Marquez to help maintain the Matadors' lead.
CSUN almost picked up its third goal of the match in the 73rd minute when Brown saved a shot from Gabriela Robles off a set piece. Delgado made her final save in the 87th minute as she tapped away a shot from Camille Lafaix, grazing the crossbar. CSUN withstood a late Cal Poly corner kick before controlling the clock in the final moments of the contest.
GAME NOTES
With Hinojosa and Arteaga hitting the net, a total of 10 Matadors have scored at least once this season. The tandem also picked up their first career goals in the match while Willcot collected her first assist of her career.
Five field players played the full 90 minutes, which include Amanda Martin, Sydney Gilbert, Amber Edemann, Kacie Garrity and Robles.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH KEITH WEST
"I thought we played really well tonight. After the Hawai'i trip, coming back I was scared about our legs and being tired but I thought we had great energy. We scored tonight and it's always easier when you score. It was big time getting the goals early in the match, especially for Cindy Arteaga and Gaby Hinojosa - they both have been doing pretty well. I was happy to see them both get their first goal.
I thought early on the wind was a big factor. [Cal Poly] got four or five chances with the wind. Delgado came up big time in the first 15-20 minutes and she made some acrobatic saves."
UP NEXT
The Matadors continue their three-match homestand next Thursday, Oct. 17 against UC Santa Barbara. Kickoff from Matador Soccer Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
