Matadors Sweep Cal State Fullerton to Complete Homestand
10/19/2019 10:01:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Freshman Taylor Orshoff pounded a match-high 13 kills to pace the CSUN Women's Volleyball team to a straight-set victory over Cal State Fullerton in a Big West Conference match Saturday night at The Matadome.
With the 25-21, 25-21, 25-19 win, the Matadors finish up a 2-0 homestand while improving to 8-11 overall and 3-4 in the Big West. The loss drops the Titans to 10-8 overall and 2-5 in conference play.Â
KEY STATISTICS
• Orshoff led all hitters in the match with 13 kills, hitting .417 on 24 attacks. Senior Morgan Salone and sophomore Seyvion Waggoner each added 10 kills with Salone hitting .444 on 18 swings.
• Lexi McLeod and Hayden Warnock each chipped in eight kills with McLeod adding eight digs and two aces while Warnock added five blocks while hitting .500 on 14 attacks.
• Hannah Merjil and Kamalu Makekau-Whittaker led the CSUN hitters to an efficient hitting night as Makekau-Whittaker notched her team-leading sixth double-double of the season with 24 assists and 13 digs while Merjil had 22 assists and three digs. Libero Makayla Bradford posted a team-high 14 digs as CSUN had a slight 51-48 edge in team digs.
• The Matadors had 52 kills on .260 hitting while Cal State Fullerton had 36 kills on .194 hitting.
• Taylor Fezzey led the Titans with nine kills (.280) while Julia Crawford added eight kills and nine digs in the loss.
COACH JEFF STORK SAID
"Tonight was an emotional match for us with Fullerton setting the tone after sweeping Long Beach State last night. I thought they played ok, we just played better. We had five players with double digits in points so it's tough to stop us when we have that kind of production. The setters did a great job running the offense and our defense did a good enough job to affect them which is a good thing."
SET 1
After a Crawford kill gave the Titans an early 2-1 lead, the Matadors rolled off five straight points to force a Fullerton timeout. A block by Orshoff and Warnock maintained a four-point CSUN lead at 10-6 when the Matadors went on a 4-1 run to open up their largest lead at 14-7. The visitors battled back to within two at 18-16 and again at 20-18 before kills from Orshoff and Waggoner gave CSUN a 22-18 cushion. But the Titans again trimmed the lead to two at 23-21 before an Orshoff kill and a Shawnee De Oliveira ace capped the set 25-21.Â
SET 2
With the score tied at 4-4, Fullerton scored three straight to lead 7-4. The Titans held on to a three-point advantage at 10-7 when a Crawford hitting error propelled the Matadors on a 5-0 which gave CSUN its first lead at 12-10. The Titans scored twice out of a timeout before Warnock's kill kept CSUN in front 13-12. Neither team would lead by more than two until a pair of McLeod kills, an Orshoff kill and a Titan setting error opened up a 22-17 Matador lead. Fullerton rallied late behind a 4-1 run to get within 23-21 but Orshoff came through with kills on consecutive points to seal the set 25-21.
SET 3
The Titans scored twice to snap a 6-6 tie when a Warnock kill fueled a 5-0 run, capped by another McLeod kills, gave CSUN an 11-8 lead. The Titans then rallied out of a timeout, engineering a 4-2 run to pull within 13-12. But an ensuing 4-1 run by the Matadors forced another Fullerton timeout with the Titans trailing 17-13. A McLeod kill opened up CSUN's largest lead at 21-16 and the Matador lead didn't dip below five points the remainder of the set.
