Matadors Fall at UC Davis on Late Goal
10/27/2019 4:04:00 PM | Women's Soccer
DAVIS, Calif.---UC Davis' goal in the 82nd minute proved to be the difference in CSUN Women's Soccer's (10-5-3, 4-2 Big West) 2-1 defeat on a windy Sunday afternoon at Aggie Soccer Field. Junior Bethany Fitzsimmons scored her fifth of the season and second in as many matches in the first half. Sophomore Amanda Delgado racked up six saves in net.
The Aggies edged the Matadors in shots, 14-13, while the teams finished with eight shots on goal apiece. CSUN had two of the three corner kicks in the match while the Matadors were whistled for 10 of the 19 fouls. Amber Edemann was shown the yellow card in the 22nd minute.
FIRST HALF
The Matadors got off to a strong start in the opening minutes of the first half. After missed shots from Sydney Gilbert and Cindy Arteaga, the Matadors went on the attack, leading to the game's first goal. Off a long kick from Avery DeWitt, Fitzsimmons found room and went one-on-one with goalkeeper Nick Rucki. Fitzsimmons finished with poke shot that floated over the outstretched hands of Rucki, just beneath the crossbar.Â
Fitzsimmons and Kacie Garrity would put shots on frame in the ensuing minutes as Rucki racked up five saves in the first half alone. Later in the half, the Aggies would have a scoring chance on the left side of the field. An open Leslie Fregoso was on the left wing with open field in front before Kassandra Matthews committed a costly foul less than six yards from the goal. Jane Gonzalez took the penalty kick and scored just below a diving Delgado to even the match in the 35th minute. Alexis White took the final shot of the half in the 44th minute but Rucki made another save to keep the game nodded at 1-1.
SECOND HALF
CSUN earned a pair of solid looks near the 71st minute that almost gave the Matadors the lead once more. On one play, White found herself ahead of the Aggie defense and in a one-on-one with the Rucki. Delgado sent a tapper from inside 15 yards but Rucki was able to get a foot on the ball. Moments later, DeWitt broke away from the defense at the top of the box but her shot sailed to the left where Rucki made a two-handed stop.
As the game entered the 82nd minute, a Matador turnover near midfield would result in the Aggies taking the lead. Playing the ball up the left side, Aliyah Walker sailed a perfectly placed cross in front of the goal where Fregoso headed in the go-ahead strike. Fitzsimmons would have the Matadors' last look of the day on a deflected ball above the 18-yard box but her shot sailed just high of the crossbar.
GAME NOTES
With her goal on Sunday, Fitzsimmons has tied White for the team lead in goals with five. DeWitt's helper was her first this season. The quartet of Gilbert, Edemann, Garrity and Gabriela Robles played the full 90 minutes.
Despite today's loss, the Matadors will head into the final week of the regular season no higher than second place and no lower than third place in the conference standings, with two other Big West games set to take place on Sunday night. CSUN is also three points back of first-place Cal State Fullerton who it will face in the regular season finale next Sunday.
