10/28/2019 9:36:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Sophomore Darius Brown II scored a game-high 19 points as CSUN Men's Basketball defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 81-70 in an exhibition game on Tuesday at The Matadome. Junior Terrell Gomez added 16 points while sophomore Elijah Harkless filled up the stat sheet with 15 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and seven steals.
The Matadors finished shooting 46.2 percent from the floor while the Toros were held to 38.6 percent shooting. CSUN knocked down 7-of-23 from 3-point range led by junior Lance Coleman II making 3-of-4. Dominguez Hills would connect on 10-of-30 from downtown. In points in the paint, the Matadors outscored the Toros 38-26 while CSUN also possessed a 19-2 edge in fast break points.
FIRST HALF
The Toros came out fast in the early moments of the game, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers to stake to a 12-3 lead. After a CSUN timeout, the Matadors surged with an 8-0 run, led by 3-pointers from Coleman II and Gomez. Harkless gave the Matadors their first lead (16-14) when he stole the ball from Brandon Jackson and connected with a 3-point play on the other end. CSUN would go on another 7-0 run, capped by a Gomez jumper, to pull in front 23-18.
Harkless continued to be a terror on defense as he again forced a turnover and converted on a 3-point play to push the CSUN lead to eight (30-22). The highlight of the half would come after yet another Harkless steal, leading to a thunderous dunk from the Matador sophomore that made it a double-digit game at the 2:08 mark. Michael Ou later threw down a dunk of his own and Gomez hit two late free throws to give the Matadors a 44-30 lead at the break.
SECOND HALF
The Matadors quickly extended to a 16-point advantage on an Ou 3-point play off a feed from Harkless early in the second half. Festus Ndumanya knocked down one of his three field goals to make it a 58-43 game at the 12:50 mark. Ndumanya and Harkless later hit back-to-back shots to give CSUN its biggest lead at 68-49.
Trailing by double-digits throughout the second half, the Toros made a late charge to cut the lead to single digits in the final minutes of the period. After an Alex Sokol jumper gave CSUN a 72-55 lead with 5:06 to play, Dominguez Hills went on an 11-0 run as Brandon Jackson hit two consecutive treys. The Toros would have possession with under two minutes to go and trailing by six when Harkless forced yet another turnover leading to a key Brown II jumper in transition. Harkless also came away with perhaps the game clincher when he knocked down a 3-pointer to push the lead back to nine with a minute to play. Brown II and Ou converted on late free throws to help hold off the Toros.
GAME NOTES
Brown II went 8-of-12 from the field and made 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. Gomez also had a solid night from the floor, making 6-of-14 overall and 2-of-6 from 3-point range. Coleman II and Ou added nine points apiece for the Matadors while Nudmanya chipped in with six off the bench on 3-of-3 shooting.
For the Toros, Wonder Smith scored a team-high 18 points.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH MARK GOTTFRIED
"I think overall our performance was pretty good. [We had] a lot of errors that we can improve on obviously. It was the first time out there for a lot of the guys and we were missing some guys too. Overall, I was pleased."
"I thought Lance started really well, and he's a player that can help us score the ball a little bit. There's still areas he can improve on but offensively he can make some shots. Terrell made some big shots tonight. I thought Elijah played really well too. You look at Elijah's numbers across the board - they're very impressive. Festus gave us some good minutes as an inside player."
UP NEXT
CSUN sets its sights on the regular season, beginning next week. The Matadors visit Oregon State on opening night next Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 8 p.m. The game will air live on the Pac-12 Network.
