10/4/2019 12:07:00 AM | Women's Soccer
HONOLULU---CSUN Women's Soccer (6-4-3, 0-1 Big West) dropped its Big West opener to Hawai'i in overtime by a 2-1 final on Thursday evening at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Freshman Cora Willcot scored her first career goal in the first half, which gave CSUN a one-goal lead. The Rainbow Wahine's Kayla Ryan scored the equalizer in the second half and hit the game-winner in the 92nd minute to give her team the victory.
The Matadors outshot Hawai'i 15-10 in the match including 7-5 in shots on goal. The teams finished with four corner kicks apiece. Sophomore Amanda Delgado racked up two saves in net.
FIRST HALF
CSUN took seven of the teams' combined eight shots in the opening stanza. Bethany Fitzsimmons put the Matadors' first shot on frame in the sixth minute, which was saved by Alexis Mata, leading to a CSUN corner kick. Cindy Arteaga would have her shot blocked before she missed wide of the net in the early minutes of the half. Mata made her second save off a shot from Alexis White in the 38th minute but the ensuing shot from Willcot struck the back of the net, giving the Matadors a 1-0 lead.
The Matadors' defense would be the story in the first half, limiting the Rainbow Wahine to one shot, which came in the 18th minute off the foot of Kayla Watanabe. CSUN also allowed just one corner kick in the first 45 minutes.
SECOND HALF
After struggling to register many offensive attacks in the first half, the Rainbow Wahine came out as the aggressors in the opening minutes of the second half. Ryan missed wide of the net just two minutes into the period, followed by a shot from Kelci Sumida that was saved by Delgado. In the 52nd minute, Ryan broke through for Hawai'i when she found the netting off a pass from Morgan Meza.
The Matadors appeared as though they would answer right back as a series of shots from White, Willcot and Amya LawsonKitchen each reached the frame but Mata stopped each attempt. White later hit the crossbar and Arteaga came up short on three different attacks after the 80th minute. The Rainbow Wahine also had chances to take the lead late when Ryan hit the crossbar with under a minute to play. The CSUN defense also saved a Eliza Ammendolia shot in the final moments.
OVERTIME
Nearly coming away with the game-winner late in regulation, Ryan would score her second goal of the game just 71 seconds into overtime. Off a counter attack, Watanabe corralled a long pass and found Ryan who finished from six yards to give Hawai'i a golden goal win.
