CSUN Opens Big West Play at Hawai'i, UC Riverside

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (6-3-3) kicks off Big West play this week with a pair of road matches. The Matadors visit Hawai'i on Thursday with kickoff set for 10 p.m. PDT. The team then returns to Southern California in time for a Sunday match with UC Riverside at 7 p.m. Live stats will be available for both contests.
The Matadors look to bounce back after a pair of tough 1-0 decisions last week at home. CSUN fell to Pepperdine on Thursday and Denver on Sunday to wrap up non-conference play. Both Pepperdine and Denver struck in the first half and held on the rest of the way. Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Delgado suffered tough-luck losses in both matches despite racking up a combined seven saves.
With the non-conference slate in the books, the Matadors head into Big West play with their most wins since the 2015 season. CSUN is second in the conference standings, behind only Cal State Fullerton (7-2-1). On the defensive side, the Matadors have been the league's toughest team to score on as they lead the Big West in shutouts (6), goals-against-average (0.71) and goals allowed (9).
The Matador goalkeeping tandem of Delgado and Taylor Thames rank second in the Big West in shutouts (3) and third in wins (3). Delgado is also in second place in goals-against-average (0.87), third in saves (34) and fourth in minutes in goal (825:00). On the offensive side of things, Alexis White and Bethany Fitzsimmons are tied four fourth place in goals with three while White is seventh in points (7). Cindy Arteaga is also ranked fourth in the conference in shots attempted (25).
CSUN is 9-10-3 all-time in conference openers but the Matadors are winless in their last four Big West openers (0-2-2). Last season, Cal Poly handed the Matadors a 1-0 defeat in Sal Luis Obispo to kick off Big West action. The Matadors' last conference-opening win came in 2014 when CSUN defeated UC Santa Barbara, 1-0.
In 15 all-time meetings, the Matadors hold a 10-4-1 edge over Hawai'i. The Rainbow Wahine hung a 2-1 loss on CSUN last season in Northridge. The match last season had several dramatic moments including Lindsay Kutscher's game-tying goal with two seconds left in regulation. The Rainbow Wahine would prevail in overtime on a goal from Sarah Lau. CSUN has won the last two meetings in Hawai'i with its most recent victory coming in 2017 by a 2-1 final.
CSUN is 12-7 against UC Riverside in the all-time series. The Matadors come in with a four-match winning streak in the series with three of those four matches ending by a 1-0 outcome. Last season, CSUN prevailed behind a second-half goal from Marissa Favela to win 1-0. The Matadors also won by a 1-0 margin in the team's last meeting in Riverside two seasons ago as Bret Guarino scored a late goal.
A Closer Look at Hawai'i
Despite a 2-6-1 overall record, Hawai'i has played against three teams currently ranked in the Top 25 (UCLA, USC and Washington State) and competed in seven one-goal matches. The Rainbow Wahine last played on Sept. 22 against UCLA, which resulted in a 4-0 defeat to stretch the team's losing streak to four. Hawai'i is 1-4-1 at home this season with its lone win coming against Nevada in overtime. Head coach Michele Nagamine is in her ninth season at the helm.
Freshman Kelci Sumida has two of the team's five goals this season to go with a team-high four points. Sumida's two strikes have also been game-winners in wins over Nevada and North Dakota State. Sophomores Michaela Rentner, Natalie Daub and McKenzie Moore have also scored this season. Senior Alexis Mata has seen every minute in goal and produced three shutouts along with a 1.47 goals-against-average.
A Closer Look at UC Riverside
The Highlanders (2-7-1) played to a 1-1 draw with Denver last Thursday before falling at Santa Clara 2-0 on Sunday. UCR is looking to snap a four-match winless streak when it visits UC Irvine on Thursday. The Highlanders are 1-1-1 at UCR Soccer Stadium with its only win coming against Idaho (1-0). Head coach Nat Gonzalez is in his eighth season at the helm of UCR.
Junior Alexis Vera leads the Highlanders with two goals scored and five total points. The trio of freshman Alexandra Hargrave and sophomores Leigh Polson and Brianna Saldana have also hit the back of the net. Senior Annie Bailey has seen the most minutes at goalkeeper, logging over 574 minutes while posting a 1.88 GAA. Freshman Caela Kaio has started four matches in goal, picking up two shutouts to go with a 1.75 GAA.
