Gomez's Career-High 33 Not Enough in Loss to Pepperdine
11/12/2019 10:06:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Junior Terrell Gomez poured in a career-high 33 points but CSUN Men's Basketball (0-3) could not overcome a double-digit second-half deficit in its 94-82 defeat at the hands of Pepperdine on Tuesday at The Matadome. Gomez scored 21 of his 33 points in the second half and finished 7-of-11 from 3-point range. Sophomore Darius Brown II added 12 points while sophomore Elijah Harkless chipped in with six points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Pepperdine finished with a 49.2 shooting percent for the night including going 13-of-28 from 3-point range (46.4 percent). CSUN shot 54.5 percent in the second half to finish 46.4 percent from the field for the game. The Matadors also knocked down 13-of-24 from downtown (54.2 percent). The Waves out-rebounded the Matadors 36-29 and posted a 32-18 edge in points in the paint.
FIRST HALF
The Matadors began quickly with jumpers from Gomez and Brown II to take an early 5-2 lead. The Waves though responded with a 10-0 run, capped by a dunk from Kessler Edwards to flip the score to 12-5. Gomez would keep the Matadors within striking distance with seven-straight CSUN points. Festus Ndumanya threw down a dunk on the fastbreak to bring CSUN within a 21-16 margin at the 8:42 mark but the Matadors would not get any closer in the half.
Pepperdine surged with another 8-0 run, highlighted by 3-pointers Kameron Edwards and Skylar Chavez, to take a 29-16 lead. Lance Coleman II stroked a 3-pointer at the 1:41 mark to trim the deficit to single digits (35-26) but two late free throws from Kessler Edwards make it a 37-27 game at the break.
SECOND HALF
After shooting just 34.8 percent in the first half, the Matadors rolled to start the second half with five-straight made baskets. Brown II capped the streak with a 3-pointer then Gomez followed with a trey of his own on the ensuing possession off an offensive rebound. Moments later, Brown II scored on a runner in the lane to bring CSUN within 50-43 at the 14:51 mark of the second half. The Waves though kept the Matadors at bay with strong offensive play of their own as the Edwards brothers scored on consecutive possessions to push the lead back to double digits.
Gomez would trim the lead to 59-51 on two free throws before a dry spell that lasted five minutes turned the game around for the Matadors. The Waves took advantage and went on a 17-0 run over the span, capped by a 3-point play from Kameron Edwards. Staring at a 25-point deficit with six minutes to play, the Matadors kept on battling and would put together a furious rally in the final minutes. CSUN converted on 10 of its next 12 possessions as Gomez scored 13 points over that stretch. A 3-pointer from Gomez with 1:14 left to play suddenly cut the lead to 90-78. However, with time on its side, Pepperdine withstood the late charge and made its free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.
GAME NOTES
Gomez's seven 3-pointers tied the career-high he previously set against Hawai'i last January. He also finished one field goal shy of a career best as he went 10-of-20 from the field. Coleman II added eight points to go with four rebounds. Brendan Harrick scored six points off the bench, knocking down 2-of-3 from 3-point range.
For Pepperdine, Kessler and Kameron Edwards scored a team-high 22 points apiece. Kessler Edwards finished with a double-double, grabbing 15 rebounds.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH MARK GOTTFRIED
"I'm proud of our guys. They played hard and they competed hard. We're a little short-handed and we have to figure it out. I like the fact in the second half we came back and scored 55 points in the second half. I thought we struggled to score the ball in the first half. We made adjustments and went to a small lineup and I thought it helped us score the ball. We have to figure out how to defend and rebound a little bit better."
UP NEXT
The Matadors kick off play at the Roman Legends Classic with a road test at No. 22 Auburn on Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. (PST). The game will air live on the SEC Network.
