11/2/2019 9:32:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Taylor Orshoff and Morgan Salone each had a match-high 11 kills to lead the CSUN Women's Volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep over UC Riverside in a Big West Conference match Saturday night at The Matadome.
The 25-18, 25-15, 25-18 win, the Matadors' second consecutive sweep, improves CSUN to 10-13 overall and 5-6 in the Big West while the visiting Highlanders drop to 5-17 overall and 1-10 in conference play.Â
KEY STATISTICS
• Salone put down 11 kills while committing just a single hitting error on 18 attacks to hit .556. Orshoff matched Salone with 11 kills, hitting .500 on 22 errorless swings.
• A trio of Matador hitters added five kills as Hayden Warnock (.333), Nicole Nevarez (.143) and Seyvion Waggoner (.111) combined for 15 of CSUN's 40 kills in the win.Â
• Libero Makayla Bradford scooped up a team-high 12 digs while Lexi McLeod chipped in 11 digs, three kills and one ace.Â
• After hitting .350 in Friday's sweep over UC Davis, setters Hannah Merjil and Kamalu Makekau-Whittaker combined for 31 assists as CSUN hit .326 (40-9-95) against UCR.
• The visiting Highlanders hit .059 (30-24-101) as Ashley Dittman and Alexi Vanlandingham each had a team-high eight kills.
COACH JEFF STORK SAID
"We started out slow in sets one and three, we gave away some points which put a little pressure on us to produce a little more than normal. Taylor was great the last two matches and the middles were very good. If the ball is distributed properly, the 6-2 creates problems for some teams, they're not sure where to go to stop us. Great effort tonight and two great wins for the Matadors this week."
SET 1
The Matadors had a difficult time shaking the visitors in the opening set. The Highlanders used a 4-0 run to overcame an early 6-3 CSUN and take their first lead at 7-6. After the Matadors tied the score following a Warnock kill, UCR claimed five of the next seven points to open up a 12-9 lead. A Salone kill followed by a Highlander hitting error trimmed the lead to 12-11 before UCR went on a 5-1 run to open its largest lead 16-12. Following a CSUN timeout, Orshoff's kill propelled the Matadors on a  6-0 run that forced a UCR timeout at 18-16. From there, CSUN continued to pull away as a 5-1 run put the Matadors in front 23-17 before taking the set 25-18.  Â
SET 2
CSUN claimed seven of the first eight points of the set before the visitors battled back to get within 8-5. A pair of UCR miscues pushed the lead back to five (10-5) and despite the Highlanders cutting the lead to three (11-8), the Matadors used a 5-1 run to separate themselves with a 16-9 lead. The CSUN would not dip below five points the remainder of the set as the Matadors claimed a 25-15 victory.
SET 3
After a Highlander hitting error and a Nevarez kill gave CSUN an early 8-5 lead, the visitors put together a 6-0 run to force a Matador timeout at 11-8. The teams traded sideouts until 13-10 when CSUN took advantage of three Highlander miscues and an Orshoff kill to regain the lead at 14-13. The Matadors still held a 17-16 lead when Orshoff connected for a kill followed by three straight Salone kills and CSUN opened up a 21-16 lead. The visitors would get within four on two occasions, the last at 22-18, when a pair of UCR hitting errors and a Waggoner kill gave the Matadors the 25-18 victory and the 3-0 win. Â
