11/8/2019 8:10:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
FULLERTON, Calif. - Nicole Nevarez pounded a team-high 17 kills to lead three CSUN hitters with double-figure kills as the CSUN Women's Volleyball team picked up a 3-1 victory over Cal State Fullerton in a Big West Conference match Friday evening at Titan Gym.
The four-set win (25-18, 25-22, 26-28, 25-11), the Matadors' third consecutive victory, evens CSUN's conference record at 6-6 (11-13 overall). The loss drops the Titans to 11-11 overall and 3-8 in conference play.Â

ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH SUSIE TERRUSA SAID
"The team played very steady with the exception of the third set but I like how we responded in the fourth. Our blocking was very good and it affected their hitters. Passing and defense was also good. Overall great win!"
SET 1
The Matadors claimed the first four points of the match and led 6-1 following a Nevarez kill. Three straight Fullerton points trimmed the lead to two and the Titans still trailed by two at 9-7 when CSUN engineered a 7-3 run to open up a 16-10 lead. Two straight Fullerton points cut the lead to four before the Matadors all but sealed the set behind a 4-1 run. A Nevarez ace gave CSUN its biggest lead (20-13) and the Matadors would go on to claim the opening set 25-18.
SET 2
CSUN scored three straight to snap a 6-6 tie and would eventually lead 13-8 when Orshoff and Warnock stuffed a Titan attack. The Matador lead swelled to six following a Titan hitting error before the hosts rallied behind a 5-1 run to pull within one at 17-16. CSUN scored three straight out of a timeout to push its lead back to 20-16 before Fullerton answered with two straight. The Titans also trailed by two at 21-19, 22-20, 23-21 and 24-22 before Nevarez and Morgan Salone stuffed a Fullerton on set point.
SET 3
Needing a win to stay in the match, the Titans opened up their largest lead of the match at 13-9 forcing a Matador timeout. Fullerton then extended the lead to 21-17 before the Matadors rallied to pull within 23-22 following a Waggoner/Warnock block. With CSUN down 24-23, a Waggoner kill saved one set point and kills from Orshoff at 25-24 and 26-25 saved two other set points before Orshott's attack landed wide and the Titans pulled out a 28-26 win.
SET 4
The Matadors claimed six of the first seven points to force an early Titan timeout. Then with Warnock serving, the Matadors extended the lead to 12-1 before the hosts got on the board again. CSUN built its lead to as many as 14 at 17-3 following a block by McLeod and Salone. The Matador lead remained in the double digits throughout the set before Orshoff's 11th kill of the night on match point sent CSUN to the 25-11 win.
