CSUN Continues Legends Classic vs. Colgate, Green Bay

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (0-5) continues play at the Roman Legends Classic presented by Old Trapper this weekend with a trip to Green Bay. The Phoenix will host the Green Bay Legends Classic Subregional round with the Matadors playing games against Colgate on Sunday at 2 p.m. (4 p.m. CT) and host Green Bay on Monday at 5 p.m. (7 p.m. CT). Fans can watch both games on FloSports with the purchase of a subscription. Ghizal Hasan will be on the call for each contest in audio broadcasts on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health.
The Matadors dropped the first two games of the Legends Classic last weekend. CSUN fell at nationally-ranked Auburn 116-70 on Friday before suffering a 90-62 setback at Richmond on Sunday afternoon.
The Matadors fell into an 11-0 hole against Auburn and never recovered as the Tigers built a 66-38 lead at halftime. Auburn held on the rest of the way, led by Samir Doughty's game-high 33 points. Junior Terrell Gomez knocked down 5-of-11 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 23 points against Auburn. Playing against the SEC power, freshman Brendan Harrick poured in a career-high 17 points, making 5-of-9 from 3-point range while sophomores Elijah Harkless and Jared Pearre tallied 11 and 10 points respectively.
On Sunday, CSUN again struggled at the outset of the game, giving Richmond a chance to start off with a 16-0 lead. A second 22-0 run later in the half put the Matadors in an early 33-point role they would not climb out of for the remainder of the game. Harrick tallied 17 points for the second-straight game, making 5-of-7 from downtown. Gomez chipped in with 15 points while sophomore Michael Ou scored a career-high 14 points to go with eight rebounds.
With 1,107 career points, Gomez moved up to 16th place on the Matadors' career scoring list ahead of Pat Bolden (1984-88). Up next, Gomez can reach 14th place with 52 more points, which is currently occupied by the tandem of Calvin Chitwood (2004-08) and George Robnett (1970-74). Gomez is also in second place in team history with 201 3-point field goals made, which are 27 away from all-time leader Josh Greene's (2010-14) career mark of 228.
On the Big West leaderboard, Gomez leads the league in points per game (20.8) while he is ranked second in minutes per game (36.4) and fourth in free throw percentage (88.2). Sophomore Darius Brown II is also tops in the Big West in assists per game (5.0) while he is scoring 8.3 points per game. Harrick is second on the team in scoring (9.6) and finds himself ranked third in the Big West in 3-point percentage (60.0) and eighth in field goal percentage (56.7).
CSUN will play Colgate and Green Bay for the first time in team history at the Legends Classic. The Matadors are 2-1 against teams from the Patriot League as their last game against the league took place in 2006 against Lehigh (74-68 win). CSUN holds a 5-6 record against Horizon League teams with its last game being a 72-67 win over Wright State in Nov. 2015.
A Closer Look at Colgate
The Raiders defeated Cortland 89-50 on Thursday night to improve to 2-3 on the season. In Colgate's only other Legends Classic game, the Raiders fell at Auburn on Monday, 91-62. Colgate has also played a pair of ACC teams this season in Clemson and Syracuse, falling in both games. Last season's Patriot League champion, Colgate went 24-11 and took Tennessee to the limit in a 77-70 defeat in the NCAA Round of 64 this past March.
Colgate has four returning starters and nine total letterwinners on their 2019-20 squad, led by reigning Patriot League Player of the Year, senior Rapolas Ivanauskas. This season, Ivanauskas is averaging 14.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Other All-Patriot League honorees, junior Jordan Burns is averaging 12.6 points and 4.0 assists while senior Will Rayman is grabbing 6.8 rebounds with 11.6 points on the year.
A Closer Look at Green Bay
The Phoenix (1-3) dropped Legends Classic games at New Mexico (93-78) and Wisconsin (88-70) over the past week. Green Bay has also played nationally-ranked Purdue this season, falling 79-57. Last season, the Phoenix finished 21-17 and advanced to the championship game of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, falling to Marshall.
Freshman Amari Davis leads the team in scoring at 13.0 points per game on 63.2 percent shooting. Senior JayQuan McCloud is posting 12.8 points and 5.3 assists while junior PJ Pipes is averaging 12.0 through four games. As a team, the Phoenix average 80.0 points per game.
