Fullerton Edges CSUN 2-1 in Regular Season Finale
11/3/2019 4:29:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FULLERTON, Calif---A pair of second-half goals lifted Cal State Fullerton to a 2-1 win over CSUN Women's Soccer (11-6-3, 5-3 Big West) on Sunday afternoon at Titan Stadium. Fullerton's win gave the Titans the Big West regular season championship and an opportunity to host next week's conference tournament. Freshman Cindy Arteaga scored her second goal of the season for the Matadors just before halftime. Sophomore Amanda Delgado collected five saves in net.
The Titans outshot the Matadors 20-7 in the match including 7-4 in shots on goal. Corner kicks went nearly all of Fullerton's way at 12-1. CSUN was whistled for eight of the 12 fouls in the contest. Amber Edemann and Fullerton's Kaya Hawkinson were shown the yellow card.
FIRST HALF
The Titans came out of the blocks on the attack, posting five shots and four corner kicks in the first 15 minutes of play. Delgado made four saves in the first half alone including a thrilling save in the ninth minute. On the play, Atlanta Primus took a shot from the 18-yard mark looking for the left post but Delgado dove to her left and tapped the ball out of bounds. Delgado would make another crucial two-handed grab in the 30th minute off a shot from Callie Petrey-Juarez from point-blank range straight away.
CSUN withstood the early charge and moved up the field late in the half, leading to a scoring chance. With less than three minutes left before halftime, Stephanie Gallardo took the ball up near the top of the box where she flicked the ball backward. Fullerton goalkeeper Noa Schumacher left her post and attempted to break up the play but Ashley Cruz got a touch on the ball. With a loose ball in the box, Arteaga cleaned up the play to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead.
SECOND HALF
Out of the halftime break, CSUN continued to thwart potential Titan strikes. The Matador defense blocked two shots while they survived shots from Maddie Bennett and Savannah Sloniger. The Titans though finally broke through in the 68th minute to square the game at 1-1. Off a drive up the field, Primus connected with Petrey-Juarez who found Bennett from the top of the box. Bennett beat her defender and hit the ball into an empty net as Delgado moved up off her line.
Fullerton would strike again 11 minutes later, this time capitalizing on a few touches in the box. Sloniger sent the initial kick into the box and Haley Brown cleaned up the play with a final touch to give the Titans the lead. CSUN had a pair of quality looks in Fullerton's box in the closing minutes but Cora Willcot and Arteaga's shots were saved by Schumacher.
GAME NOTES
With her first career helper in the match, Cruz is the 16th Matador to register a point this season. Arteaga finished with a team-high two shots, both of which on goal while Kacie Garrity and Willcot also had one shot on goal apiece. Ify Mbeledogu, Sydney Gilbert, Garrity and Edemann all played the full 90 minutes on Sunday.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH KEITH WEST
"Fullerton has an excellent side. They've got a great team and a great coach. My hat goes off to them because they've got a great side this year. We played hard but we've got to play better Thursday."
"It's hard when your senior captain goes down at the center back spot (Amanda Martin) but we're playing some players that are stepping up big time for us and that's what a team is all about. Players make plays and I think Fullerton made a couple more plays than we made today."
