CSUN Advances to Big West Final on White's Golden Goal
11/7/2019 8:15:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FULLERTON, Calif.---Alexis White's golden goal in the 100th minute lifted CSUN Women's Soccer to a 1-0 win over UC Santa Barbara on Thursday evening in a Big West Tournament semifinal match. Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Delgado racked up eight saves to notch her eighth clean sheet while CSUN tallied its 11th shutout overall. The Matadors will play for a Big West Tournament title on Sunday at 5 p.m. from Titan Stadium.
UCSB outshot the Matadors 18-11 but both teams finished with eight shots on goal apiece. The Gauchos also held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. A total of 15 fouls were called in the match with nine whistled on UCSB.
FIRST HALF
The Gauchos outshot the Matadors 11-3 in the first half but the possession total was nearly identical as UCSB held the ball for 51 percent of the time. Shaelan Murison had perhaps the Gauchos best look in the third minute of play as a cross found Murison from 10 yards but her attempt went wide. Amanda Delgado was active throughout the first half, racking up five saves in the half. Eight of the Gauchos' 11 shots of the half took place in the first 15 minutes as the Matador defense finally settled in over the remainder of the half.
White gave the Matadors their best scoring chance of the half on a drive up the left side before goalkeeper Evann Smith made a save going to her right. Bethany Fitzsimmons also put a shot on frame in the 17th minute that was saved by Smith. Murison took the last shot attempt of the half in the 38th minute with the shot going wide.
Â
SECOND HALF
The Matadors came out fast out of the halftime break and nearly took the lead in the 46th minute. Amya LawsonKitchen set up Cindy Arteaga on the break leading to an Arteaga shot that was kicked away from Smith, who left her post to make the play. CSUN would get another solid look on a free kick placed a yard outside the box in the 59th minute. Avery DeWitt took the free kick but her chip shot went into the waiting hands of Smith.
Â
The shots evened out in the second half with CSUN holding a narrow 7-6 edge. Smith made another save on a Fitzsimmons open look from the top of the box. The Gaucho goalkeeper pushed the shot up against the cross bar and out of bounds. Delgado kept the ball out of the net herself in the 75th minute when Lauren Moss took a spinning shot from the right side. Up against the left post, Delgado made a nice two-handed save to keep the match scoreless. CSUN had one last look in regulation when the ball bounced deep inside the box and Stephanie Gallardo took a shot from eight yards out. However, Gallardo's roller missed the net by inches and went out of bounds.Â
Â
OVERTIME
The teams traded possessions throughout the 10-minute overtime session. Murison took her ninth shot in the 98th minute but her attempt went wide. Moments later, CSUN gained possession with less than a minute to play. Moving the ball up the field, the Matadors had good field positioning inside the Gauchos' box when Ashley Cruz found LawsonKitchen. With White open on her right, LawsonKitchen sent the ball back out leading to a White looper that sailed over the outstretched hands of Smith and into the net for the game-winner.
GAME NOTES
White's goal is her sixth of the season, tying teammate Fitzsimmons for the team lead. Cruz and LawsonKitchen each collected their second assists of the year. Fitzsimmons led the Matadors with three shots with two on goal.
The Matadors' 12th victory of the season ties a program record set by three different teams in school history. The team won 12 times in 2010, also under West, as well as in 2001 and 2004.
POST GAME CHATTER
"I thought we showed a lot of resiliency and a lot of grit," said head coach Keith West. "We stuck together as a group. I can't say enough about the group as a whole and how much they believe in each other. [Delgado] kept us in the game, period. She came up big in big time moments and that's what great 'keepers do."
"My defense, the backline, they were selling out - they were throwing their bodies in front of the goal and I have to give them all the credit," said Delgado. "How can I not give my best if they are out here sacrificing everything to block those shots."
"It's about just demanding for that ball. I've been working on that shot," said White about her goal. "I had a chance to take it, and it worked out."
UP NEXT
The Matadors will play for a conference tournament title on Sunday for the third time in team history and for the second time in three years. Sunday's championship is a rematch of the 2017 final as the Matadors take on regular season champion Cal State Fullerton at 5 p.m. The game will stream live on ESPN3.
