The Matadors are coming off an 81-70 exhibition win over Cal State Dominguez Hills last Tuesday. CSUN rallied from a slow start that saw the Toros stake to an early nine-point lead before surging ahead on a 13-2 run. The Matadors led by as many as 19 points in the second half only to see the Toros cut the lead to six with 1:31 to play. However, the Matadors held off the late charge behind free throw shooting and a late 3-pointer from Harkless.Â
Sophomore Darius Brown II led all scorers with 19 points while junior Terrell Gomez added 16 points and five rebounds. Filling up the stat sheet, Harkless had perhaps the most efficient game as he finished with 15 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and seven steals. Another sophomore, Michael Ou gave the Matadors a lift as well with nine points and two rebounds.
A pair of Matadors made their debut in The Matadome in the win over the Toros. Junior Lance Coleman II knocked down 3-of-4 from 3-point range to finish with nine points while freshman Festus Ndumanya went 3-of-3 from the field to post six points off the bench.
Second-year head coach Mark Gottfried brings many of the key players from last season's squad into 2019-20. CSUN sports 10 letterwinners on its roster while it added four newcomers. Among the 10 letterwinners, the Matadors have two All-Big West First Team selections in Gomez and Big West Player of the Year Lamine Diane. Gomez is coming off a career season on the court where he averaged 19.2 points per game and made a Big West-leading 117 3-pointers. Diane converted on the most field goals in the country in 2018-19 (340) while he led in the league with 24.8 points per game (sixth in the nation) and 11.2 rebounds per game (sixth in the nation). Brown II is also among the top returners after he averaged 8.3 points and 5.2 assists as a true freshman last year.
Other key returners include senior Rodney Henderson Jr. (10.6 points per game) along with other experienced sophomores in Harkless (3.9 ppg, 2.5 rebounds per game), Ou (4.2 ppg, 2.4 rpg), Jared Pearre (2.9 ppg, 2.7 rpg) and Ron Artest III (2.4 ppg, 2.1 rpg). Among the team's six upperclassmen is senior center Mahamadou Kaba-Camara (10.5 minutes per game, 1.5 ppg) and junior guard Alex Sokol (10.3 mpg, 1.6 ppg). CSUN welcomes four newcomers to its roster in juniors Coleman II (Fullerton College), Dmytro Skapintsev (Cherkasy Polytechnic Technical College) and Miles Brookins (La Salle) along with true freshman Ndumanya (Capistrano Valley Christian School). Redshirt freshman Brendan Harrick is also looking to give the Matadors more depth on the perimeter.
CSUN seeks its first-ever win over Oregon State when the teams battle on Tuesday. The Beavers are 2-0 in the series but the teams have not faced off since the 1997-98 season. Oregon State defeated CSUN in that game, 91-79. Both of the team's all-time meetings have taken place in Corvallis, Ore. The Matadors are also looking for their first win over a Pac-12 team since defeating Utah in Dec. 2012. In season openers, the Matadors are 30-31 all-time while they are 15-46 in road openers.
A Closer Look at Oregon State
The Beavers went 18-13 overall last season and finished fourth in the Pac-12 with a 10-8 record. The program's fourth-place finish in the conference was its best since 1989-90. Oregon State returns eight letterwinners including four starters. Head coach Wayne Tinkle is in his sixth season at the helm.
Senior forward Tres Tinkle was selected to the preseason All-Pac-12 First Team while junior guard Ethan Thompson and senior forward Kylor Kelley also were named to the preseason team. Tinkle averaged a team-high 20.8 points per game to go with 8.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists. Thompson averaged 16.1 points and 4.2 rebounds while Kelley scored 7.7 points and blocked 3.3 shots per game.
