Gomez Breaks 3-Point Record, Diane Scores 30 as CSUN Rolls to 85-50 Win
12/22/2019 5:34:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---On a day where junior Terrell Gomez set a new school record for career 3-point made field goals and sophomore Lamine Diane made his season debut, CSUN Men's Basketball (3-10) led nearly from start to finish in an 85-50 win over San Francisco State on Sunday at The Matadome. Diane posted his 21st career double-double, finishing with 30 points, 12 rebounds and four steals while Gomez poured in 18 points and three assists. Sophomore Elijah Harkless just missed out on a triple-double as he finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds and eight steals.
Gomez knocked down four 3-pointers to break the all-time Matador record for career triples previously held by Josh Greene (2010-14) who was in attendance for the game. The 5-8 junior has made 229 career 3-pointers, one ahead of Greene's record of 228.
Â
FIRST HALF
The Gators would knock down their first 3-point shot to take a 3-2 lead but it would be all Matadors from then on. Diane scored 12 of the Matadors' first 18 points while Festus Ndumanya gave the Matadors four early points. CSUN would take a 21-10 lead after Gomez's first 3-pointer at the 10:46 mark. The Matadors then orchestrated a 12-0 run behind 3-pointers from Gomez and Lance Coleman II and a highlight reel Diane dunk off a feed from Darius Brown II that extended the advantage to 31-12.
Â
SECOND HALF
The lead grew to 26 in the early moments of the half as Diane made another thrilling play with a coast-to-coast dunk. Gomez would tie and break Greene's career 3-point record within an eight-second span. He first tied the record with 14:31 on the clock but after a foul, CSUN gained another possession. Off the inbound, Harkless found an open Gomez who drilled the record-breaking triple.
Gomez helped extend the lead to 31 points with two made free throws before the Gators were able to cut into the big deficit with five-straight points. The lead though never shrunk to less than 25 points as CSUN continued its impressive play on both sides of the court. Diane came up with a steal and layup on the other end with a little over eight minutes to play before hitting a 3-pointer. Brown II gave the Matadors a 33-point lead after another 3-pointer at the 5:02 mark. Harkless ended the scoring display with two made free throws, giving the Matadors an 85-50 win.
GAME NOTES
Gomez also tied Jim Malkin (1959-62) for eighth place on the Matadors' all-time career scoring list with 1,292 points. Gomez could not only pass Malkin but could also surpass Andre Chevalier (1990-94) for seventh place with 20 more points.
Coleman II added 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting off the bench. Ron Artest III also had seven rebounds in 13 minutes in a reserve role.
For the Gators, Jacob Huynh had a team-high nine points.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH MARK GOTTFRIED
"I think we played pretty well and a lot of it had to do with Lamine. He gives the team so much confidence and he makes the game easier for everybody else too. We've had a lot of games where they've put a bigger defender on Terrell and made it hard - now you've got to guard Lamine in there. I was proud of Terrell today becoming the all-time 3-point shot maker - that's huge for him. Good overall win for us. We did a lot of things well today."
