12/31/2019 3:02:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Four Matadors scored in double figures as CSUN Men's Basketball (4-11) notched a season-high in points in a 93-82 win over Morgan State on Tuesday at The Matadome. Sophomore Lamine Diane recorded his 22nd career double-double with 34 points and 13 rebounds in a full 40-minutes on the floor. Fellow sophomore Elijah Harkless tallied a career-high 20 points with seven rebounds while juniors Terrell Gomez and Lance Coleman II had 16 and 13 points respectively.
CSUN finished shooting 54.2 percent from the field and earned its way to the free throw line with regularity, making 23-for-34 (67.6 percent). On the flip side, the Bears shot 48.2 percent and hit 11-for-13 from the charity stripe. From 3-point range, Morgan State converted on 7-for-22 (31.8 percent) while CSUN made 6-for-20 (30.0 percent). The Matadors also narrowly out-rebounded the Bears, 35-34.
FIRST HALF
The teams traded four leads in the opening seven minutes of the game. CSUN made four of its first six shots to stake to a 9-5 lead early on. Gomez finished at the rim with under five minutes gone in the half to push the Matadors ahead 15-10. The Bears though answered with a 9-2 run, capped by a Stanley Davis Jr. layup to go in front. After Harkless nailed a 3-pointer to give CSUN a one-point edge, Morgan State scored five in a row to build its biggest lead at 26-22. Diane would score the Matadors' next five points, highlighted by a thunderous dunk on the fast break.
The Bears led 29-27 with nine minutes on the clock but CSUN scored the next six points. Diane threw down another dunk to hand the Matadors a small 37-34 lead before CSUN opened up a double-digit advantage in the closing minutes of the half. After a Diane drive to the hoop, Harkless scored the Matadors' next seven points. Gomez then extended the lead to 50-38 on a mid-range jumper with a little over a minute to play. Sherwyn Devonish-Prince Jr. would beat the halftime buzzer with a jumper to cut the Matador lead to 52-42 at the break.
SECOND HALF
Isaiah Burke brought the Bears within eight points on the team's first possession of the half but the Matadors kept Morgan State at bay throughout the period. Gomez would push the lead back to 10 on a jumper then Diane scored CSUN's next five points. Coleman II drained a long two-pointer before Diane scored on a putback to give CSUN a 63-50 lead. Moments later, the Matadors built a 15-point advantage on a Darius Brown II layup on the fast break.
CSUN went on an 11-2 run near the midway mark of the half as Coleman II made back-to-back 3-pointers and Gomez made a trey of his own. The Matadors' lead stood at 85-64 with 6:55 to play before the Bears executed a 9-0 run. With the lead at 85-73 with 4:17 to play, Diane helped steady the ship with a steal and drive to the hoop on the other end where he was fouled. Diane scored the next four CSUN points before Harkless earned his way to the line himself and made both attempts. Devonish-Prince Jr. trimmed the deficit to 92-80 with 1:32 to play but the Matadors controlled the clock in the final seconds to pick up the win.
GAME NOTES
Gomez now stands at 1,318 career points and in seventh place on the Matadors' all-time scoring list, ahead of Andre Chevalier (1990-94) who scored 1,311 points in his four years with the Matadors. The 5-8 junior is also now in 10th place in school history on the career minutes list with 2,858.
Off the bench, Michael Ou scored seven points and grabbed three rebounds while Brown II finished with a team-high six assists in 26 minutes.
For Morgan State, David Syfax had 15 points and eight rebounds.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH MARK GOTTFRIED
"What I liked today about our team was for the most part a really good team win even though Lamine had a lot of points. Elijah played great. Terrell and Lance played well and we got something out of Michael in there. Offensively, we played the game much better. We slowed down, ran our offense a little better and got a higher percentage shot. We scored 93 points. And defensively, outside of three minutes there at about the six-minute mark of the second half where we had a little bit of a lapse, we were good. Collectively, we played the right way on both ends and ended up playing pretty well."
UP NEXT
The Matadors wrap up non-conference play on Saturday, Jan. 4 against Saint Katherine. Tip-off from The Matadome is slated for 3 p.m.
