CSUN Opens 2020 Hosting Saint Katherine on Saturday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (4-11) wraps up non-conference play on Saturday against Saint Katherine at 3 p.m. The game will stream live on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health through BigWest.TV. Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister are on the call at 2:50 p.m.
The Matadors scored a season-high in points in a 93-82 win over Morgan State on Tuesday at The Matadome. CSUN broke open a tight game near the midway mark of the first half and led by as many as 21 points down the stretch. The Matadors also set new season-bests in assists (20) and free throws made (23) and tied their previous highs in field goals made (32) and field goal percentage (54.2).
Lamine Diane continued his impressive start to his season with 34 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and three steals. Elijah Harkless posted a career-high 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting to go with seven rebounds and five assists while Terrell Gomez scored 16 points and Lance Coleman II added 13 points off the bench.
With his 16-point effort against the Bears, Gomez is now ranked seventh on the Matadors' career scoring list with 1,318 points. Gomez can climb into sixth place, currently occupied by Jonathan Heard (2004-08), with 45 more points. With 81 career blocks, Diane is just two rejections short of surpassing Thomas Shewmake (2003-07) and Lenny Daniel (2009-11) for second place on the career blocks list. Tre Hale-Edmerson (2012-16) is the all-time leader in blocks in CSUN history with 188.
In his return to the lineup, Diane is averaging a superb 30.7 points, 11.3 rebounds, 3.0 blocks and 2.7 steals through three games this season. He is also shooting 48.4 percent from the floor. Gomez is tops in the Big West in scoring average with 21.0 points per game while he is also first in minutes per game (36.9), free throw percentage (92.9), field goals made (106) and 3-point field goals made (51). The team's top rebounder Harkless is second in the Big West in defensive rebounds per game (5.3) and fifth in rebounds per game (6.5). Harkless is also pacing the conference with 2.2 steals per game. In assists, Darius Brown II is second in assists per game (4.7) and assists to turnover ratio (2.9) while hs is fourth in steals per game (1.3).
On the national leaderboard, Gomez remains second in the country in 3-point field goals made while he ranks 10th in total points (315), 13th in free throw percentage, 16th in field goals made (106) and 20th in points per game. Brown II is also 15th in the nation in assists to turnover ratio and Harkless is 18th in total steals (33).
CSUN and Saint Katherine will meet for the first time in men's basketball on Saturday. The Matadors are playing a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) team for the first time since the 2017-18 season when they defeated Life Pacific and San Diego Christian.
A Closer Look at Saint Katherine
Saint Katherine (4-10) is in its first season in the California Pacific Conference. After the men's basketball team was discontinued for three seasons, the Firebirds restarted the program prior to last season and went 10-13 overall. The Firebirds have wins over Park University, San Diego Christian, Cetys Mexicali and most recently Life Pacific on Dec. 21. Saint Katherine will visit Cal State Fullerton on Friday before facing CSUN. Both games against Fullerton and CSUN are exhibition games for the Firebirds.
Junior Zethan Dumpson leads the team in scoring (11.9 points) and rebounding (6.3) while shooting 49.2 percent. Senior Nygil Carr is a close second in scoring average with 11.4 points while junior Jared Strate (10.9 points) and senior Austin Armstead (10.6) are also scoring in double figures. As a team, the Firebirds average 72.7 points per game.
