Matadors Hold Off Portland to Notch First Road Win
12/4/2019 10:01:00 PM | Men's Basketball
PORTLAND, Ore.---Junior Terrell Gomez scored a game-high 28 points in a full 40 minutes of action as CSUN Men's Basketball (2-7) picked up its second-straight victory, defeating Portland 71-64 on Wednesday night at the Chiles Center. Freshman Brendan Harrick added 15 points while sophomore Elijah Harkless filled up the stat sheet with nine points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals. CSUN used an 11-0 run in the second half to take a lead it would not relinquish.
On a night where neither team shot its best, the Matadors shot 38.7 percent while the Pilots topped out at 32.8 percent. Coming in with the second-best 3-point percentage in the nation, Portland was held to 5-of-25 shooting from downtown (20.0 percent). CSUN made 7-of-25 from beyond the arc (28.0 percent). The Matadors out-rebounded Portland 44-41.
FIRST HALF
The Pilots staked to an 11-5 lead a little under three minutes into the game before six-straight Matador points quickly evened the game up. Portland earned 18 free throws in the first half and was able to stay ahead by earning its way to the charity stripe. Malcolm Porter made a pair of free throws to push the lead to 20-16 but Gomez answered with a 3-pointer to bring CSUN within one near the midway mark of the half.
Â
Ron Artest III gave the Matadors a lift in the first half, grabbing eight rebounds while scoring four points. His layup off a feed from Harkless gave the Matadors a 23-21 edge. CSUN turned up its defensive intensity in the closing minutes of the half, holding the Pilots without a field goal for nearly five minutes. During that span, Gomez buried another 3-pointer and Jared Pearre scored down low to help give CSUN its biggest lead at 32-24. Portland would close the final 1:19 on a 6-2 spurt, capped by a Jacob Tryon bucket to make it a 34-30 game at the break. Â
SECOND HALF
Shortly after a Darius Brown II runner in the lane, the Pilots answered for six-straight points to once again lead, 38-36. CSUN would answer behind a thunderous dunk from Pearre and a steal from Harkless that led to a layup. The Matadors trailed 45-42 until Harrick scored six consecutive points to push his team back on top. However, the Pilots responded with an 8-0 run, capped by an Isaiah White basket to put CSUN behind 53-48 with 9:32 to play.Â
After a timeout, Harkless came away with a steal before he found Gomez in transition for a 3-pointer. Moments later, Gomez made back-to-back jumpers to again give the Matadors a lead (55-53). Harkless kept the run going with a mid-range jumper then Gomez earned his way to the line and made two free throws to cap a CSUN 11-0 run. The Pilots would eventually close the gap to 61-60 with 2:14 on the clock but Gomez drilled a timely jumper in the lane on the ensuing possession. CSUN forced consecutive defensive stops before Harrick hit a key mid-range jumper to push the lead to 66-60. Despite a late 3-pointer from JoJo Walker, the Matadors made five free throws in the final minute to seal the win.
GAME NOTES
Gomez moved into 12th place on the Matadors' career scoring list, ahead of Jerry Joseph (1967-70). Standing at 1,208 career points, Gomez is just 13 points away from 10th place on the list.
Brown II scored eight points and added four assists while Pearre collected six points and six rebounds. Artest III chipped in with nine rebounds, five points and three blocks.
For Portland, Walker scored a team-high 15 points.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH MARK GOTTFRIED
"The biggest thing we wanted to do was keep them off the 3-point line, I look down and see they went 5-for-25 and one of those the ball almost hit the ceiling late in the game from a deep corner three. Our guys did a good job with that and I thought we got a lot of great minutes out of a lot of different guys. Obviously, Terrell made some huge shots. Elijah gave us great minutes again. Ron rebounded really well, Jared did some nice things and Brendan Harrick made some big shots. Good win for us - we've been on the road a lot this year and it's nice to come out here with a road win."
